Going into 'Gotham Academy', I was expecting a fluffy and fun read, something similar to '[b:Lumberjanes, Vol. 1: Beware the Kitten Holy|22554204|Lumberjanes, Vol. 1 Beware the Kitten Holy|Noelle Stevenson|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1435843806s/22554204.jpg|42397963]' - maybe because of the crossover between the two that came out a while ago. But even though there still was some fluff and a lot of fun, this graphic novel was way more than that as we instead got a dark mystery and loads of wicked secrets.
So in this comic, we meet Olive, who hasn't had it easy these few months. She is thinking of breaking up with her boyfriend, is getting bullied by some idiots in her school, and can't remember properly what happened this last summer. And not only that, but now it seems like there is a ghost around Gotham Academy. Figures. Somewhat against her will, Olive gets dragged into solving what's up with the ghost, and realises quite fast that she might be more involved than she first thought. Also, she might be getting some new, all very weird and different, friends.
Even though I find the first few issues quite slow, it soon picked up and unraveled in a very nice way, throwing some plot twists here and some familiar faces there, all done in a very cute art style. I can imagine this must be an even better read for someone who is really into DC comics - which I'm not, but I still really enjoyed this comic. I got way more than I was expecting, but it was a nice surprise, and it's going to be fun to see how well this will blend together with 'Lumberjanes'.

This is a review for the ARC (this one combines Volumes 1 to 6).
This one seemed very fun, just the kind of story I would like. Paranormal + Boarding School + set in a world with superheroes. Sadly, it fell short, mostly it had to do with the story.
The story was pretty decent, but for a big chunk of the book I was confused with things that happened. What happened to Olive? What is up with her and Kyle, are they still together? Or not? The characters also had nicknames (like Mizoguchi) which threw me off. I was searching for a map, but then I found out that Mizoguchi’s nickname is Maps.
A lot of the time it felt like I missed something, like there was another book in this series that I missed. I always hate it when books do this. I don’t need a super explanation at the beginning, but a little bit of background would be nice. Like introductions and some story on the characters.
Of course stuff is getting explained, but slowly, very slowly. And then slowly, stuff that didn’t make sense at the beginning is starting to make sense.
The characters were pretty decent. I am not sure what to think of Olive. I think I would have liked her better if she didn’t keep hinting to whatever happened to her that was apparently really traumatizing and caused her to disappear for a while.
Maps/Mizoguchi was a great character and I really liked her and her enthusiasm. I liked how geeky she was, with her games and her books and her maps. It was also really nice that she could draw/paint so well. But she was also a bit too clingy. For some reason she was almost always around Olive.
Kyle, I am not so sure what to think of him. He occasionally pops up and he seems a nice character, but I also wonder about him and what makes him tick.
It was great fun to see Bruce Wayne and the bat signal popping up. It is really one of the few signs that we are in the world/dimension of Batman (next to the whole Gotham stuff). Because at times I just forgot about it.
The last part of the book was really interesting, and it makes me curious about the rest of the comics. Maybe I will check them out!
The illustrations were the best part of this comic. They were gorgeous, beautiful and really popped out my tablet screen. The colours, the characters, everything was just perfect. The book will get extra marks for this.
All in all, I would recommend this one, but be warned, it starts really slow and you will feel like you missed stuff. Just read on and you will get more explanations.

a ya dark academia comic book sign me up.
I read the first 5 issues of this series back in 2014, so this a bit of a throwback read. I went to the library yesterday evening to return some of my books and I ended up browsing through the comics aisle. I have this urge for comics lately so when I came across Gotham Academy, I decided to give it a try. It wasn't my first time seeing. I was for a book shipping company so I have seen large orders coming in and out. And everything that has to do with the Batman world always pique my interest.
I went into this comic not really knowing what to expect and I ended up flipping through the pages. I couldn't stop myself. I was glued to the words and the art work. This was like a YA comic. I really really liked it. It was a light read nothing complicated and it was mostly straightforward. No unnecessary turns and twists. I think this series has potential to be really great so with that being said I cannot wait to read the rest.
I recommend if you are looking for something new to read.

Gotham for the tween crowd. Beautiful painted art with anime-inspired character designs. Not bad, just not for me.

Готэмская Академия - престижная частная школа, учрежденная, как и почти все в Готэме, семейством Уэйнов. И, как и все в Готэме, академия представляет собой куда больше, чем кажется на первый взгляд. Хотя бы потому, что ее здание является близнецом поместья Уэйнов, временно превращенного в Лечебницу Аркхэм. Оба здания даже связаны подземными тоннелями. В школе ходят страшилки о призраки замурованной в здании в стародавнии времена одной из дочерей семейства Кобблпотов, некоторые учителя больше похожи на костюмированных злодеев, а у директора в кабине - склад конфискованных артефактов.
И вот в такую школу после летних каникул возвращается отличница и стипендиатка Олив Силверлок. Только вот она, как это принято говорить, "очень изменилась за лето". Для начала она почти ничего не помнит о том, что происходило с ней на каникулах, хотя подозревает, что это связано с пожаром, уничтожившим северный флигель и с ее матерью. Но то, что она помнит, заставляет ее со страхом и неприязнью относиться к тому, кого боготворит весь Готэм - Бэтмену.
В первый же день после возвращения в школу Олив знакомится с Мией Мидзогути , по прозвищу Мапс - младшей сестрой своего бывшего парня, Кайла. Мапс, мало того, что представляет собой сгусток позитива и неуемного любопытства, так еще и души не чает в Олив. Так что девушки постепенно становятся лучшими подругами и вместе с еще несколькими студентами формируют "Детективный клуб", начиная исследовать все темные тайны Готэмской Академии. Если Мапс интересен сам процесс, то Олив в первую очередь интересует то, как эти тайны связаны с ее семьей. И ответы, которые она получает иногда оказываются слишком неожиданными и пугающими.
То, что в первую очередь приходит в голову, при чтении Gotham Academy - "Гарри Поттер в Готэме". И действительно, больше всего это походит на первые книги Роулинг, когда сдружившиеся любопытные ученики сбегают по ночам из своих комнат, чтобы с риском для здоровья исследовать тайны загадочного замка, в котором они оказались, а большая и страшная тайна еще лишь маячит где-то на периферии. А тайн достаточно - загадочные склепы, мистические символы, подземные ходы, таинственный призрак и и ученики, превращающиеся в летучих мышей. Да что говорить, в Готэмской Академии даже свой учитель-вервольф есть, как и в Хогвартсе. И как и в "Гарри Поттере", потенциально смертельно опасные приключения выглядят забавными проказами - ученики кормят ветчиной Киллера Крока, при помощи пожарного шланга расправляются с Глиноликим и планируют засаду на оборотня.
Не то, чтобы сюжеты в Gotham Academy были очень уж захватывающими, скорее все держится на харизме главных персонажей - в первую очередь на Мапс Мидзогути. Если Олив Силверлок выглядит погруженным в свои внутренние переживания аутсайдером, то умилительная Мапс просто искрится позитивом и непосредственностью, сыплет D&D-отсылками и всегда готова с головой броситься в очередное приключение. Как нетрудно понять из ее прозвища, она одержима картографией и обожает составлять карты различных секретных проходов и склепов. Ну а ее искренняя любовь к Олив, судя по количеству артов заставила трепетать немало шипперских сердец.
Парочке главных героев помогают разношерстная компания. Колтон Ривера - воплощение близнецов Уизли в одном лице, хитрован, лжец, торговец запрещенной пиротехникой, виртуозно обращающийся с отмычками и владеющий секретной лабораторией. Помелин Финч, помешанная на оккультизме саркастичная и язвительная девица, выступающая поначалу почти как антагонистка и изводящая Олив, но постепенно девушки находят общий язык. Кайл Мидзогути - скучноватый lawful good "золотой мальчик" академии, искренне переживающий за Олив и бепокоящийся за свою сестру Мапс. Плюс еще ряд персонажей разного градуса странности.
В первом томе (Welcome to Gotham Academy) герои знакомятся друг с другом, находят общий язык и переживают общие приключения, а читатель получает лишь туманные намеки о том, что произошло с матерью Олив Силверлок, и какое отношение к этому имеет Бэтмен, появляющийся в академии в обеих своих ипостасях.

This was a fun book. A sort of harry potter with teenage girls meets DC's super heroes. The art has some magna influence but looks very good.
