coming off the back of words of radiance this book definitely falls into a mid series lull. Dalinar’s backstory does not disappoint but his main plot in the book becomes slightly repetitive. while Sanderson is usually very good at balancing character perspectives i found at some points the amount of perspective changes becomes overwhelming and makes other characters,
particularly Kaladin and Adolin,
have less to do this time around. however there are some major highs to level out the story and Sanderson’s mid series lull is still much better than what most people are writing.

I swear to follow the will of Dalinar Kholin. This is my oath.

a cautionary tale about the dangers of committing war crimes.

the quality of this series is so consistent. i love learning more about the characters and watching them grow. i’m excited to read rhythm of war!

This book is far better on a reread after Rhythm of War. I struggled the first time through because Dalinar's flashbacks felt more frustrating. After completing the current stack of Cosmere books, it occurred to me just how important this book is for details. I went into it this time looking for those pieces and I'm looking forward to book 5 even more (didn't realize that was possible!) now that I caught the details. It does feel stuffy that first time, and I'm not a fan of Kramer and Reading. Their accents for people seemed to change midbook which felt jarring.

This was insane. With Oathbringer, Sanderson explained more concepts about the world of Roshar. I did enjoy reading, although it took me the longest out of the three so far . . .  it grew tedious, and I trudged along for the majority of the book. My interest in the characters and storyline seems to evaporate with the reading of each book.
