La grande opération de nettoyage de PAL se poursuit, je suis allé pêcher une série qui y traine depuis un moment : Les révélations de Riyria. Alors attention c’est un peu le bordel, c’est une série de 6 romans, qui ont été regroupés deux par deux en 3 « omnibus », puis en une intégrale numérique. Je vais ici chroniquer La conspiration de la couronne, le premier roman, qui est aussi la première moitié des Voleurs d’épées, et le premier sixième de l’intégrale. C’est bon ? J’ai perdu personne ? On y va.
Royce et Hadrian sont Riyria, un célèbre duo de mercenaires à la réputation bien établie. Si vous avez besoin de gens compétents pour un boulot impossible, illégal et dangereux, ils pourraient vous aider, mais il faudra y mettre le prix. Quand un noble les contacte et les paie une fortune pour sortir une épée d’un château, ça ressemble à un job facile, mais nos deux lascars vont tomber dans un piège qui va les faire condamner pour le meurtre du roi. Pour se sortir de ce guêpier, nos voleurs vont devoir détricoter un complot et trouver qui les a embobiné. Et ça va pas être simple.
La conspiration de la couronne est un roman de fantasy à priori extrêmement classique avec son univers médiéval et son duo de héros bad-ass (comment on met « bad-ass » au pluriel d’ailleurs ? « bad-asses » ? Bon, c’est des héros qui bottent des culs). Si vous cherchez un bouquin qui va redéfinir les genres, traverser les frontières et mélanger les étiquettes des libraires, c’est pas le bon candidat. Mais si une petite aventure marrante et bien goupillée vous branche, il se pourrait que Michael J. Sullivan soit pile sur ce créneau. Oui, ces révélations de Riyria commencent vraiment bien, avec une aventure réjouissante et un scénario classique mais plutôt astucieusement mis en place.
Les deux protagonistes sont au premier abord d’énormes archétypes, on a le voleur énigmatico-ténébreux et le guerrier imbattable dont l’aura transpire la coolitude, mais leurs talents se dévoilent au compte-goutte. J’ai même trouvé marrant que Hadrian se batte finalement très peu, parce qu’arrivé à la fin du bouquin on sait toujours pas vraiment si sa réputation est fondée. Les interactions de ce duo trop cool sont très marrantes, ça participe au côté « bouquin fun détente » que j’ai beaucoup apprécié. Ajoutez au mélange quelques personnages secondaires intéressants (Alric est finalement moins tête-à-claques que le début ne le laisse supposer, c’est tant mieux) et un univers qui en garde manifestement sous la pédale, et on a un début de série vraiment prometteur.
On garde à la fin de cette lecture une très bonne impression, aussi grâce à l’intrigue qui, bien que classique, se révèle assez astucieuse dans l’ensemble. L’auteur pose un petit meurtre mystérieux au milieu d’un univers fantasy, donc les aventures de nos héros se mélangent à un petit côté enquête qui va nous lancer sur quelques fausses pistes et manipulations tout à fait satisfaisantes. Du haut de ses quelques 300 pages, La conspiration de la couronne se tient très bien tout seul et amène un peu de légèreté au pays des saga fantasy massives parfois pas très digestes. Pourtant il y a de quoi se mettre sous la dent pour le lecteur avide de world-building puisqu’on nous esquisse quelques éléments de background qu’on a hâte d’explorer dans les prochains tomes. Et y’a un sorcier super-puissant qui sert à rien, mais on se doute qu’il reviendra plus tard.
Ce premier volume des Révélations de Riyria est donc une belle réussite pour moi, de la fantasy archi-classique mais du panache, une lecture légère et divertissante que j’ai pu apprécier tranquillement au coin du feu.

خیلی وقت بود تو لیست کتابایی که میخواستم بخونم بود اما دست و دلم به خوندنش نمی رفت.
یه شب بین کتابام دنبال کتابی میگشتم که در حدی جذاب باشه که نشه زمینش گذاشت و تصمیم گرفتم به riyria فرصت بدم تا خودشو نشون بده.
فصل اول داستان انقدر خوب و دلنشین بود که بدون اینکه حواسم به زمان و مکان باشه جلو رفتم و وقتی سرمو بالا آوردم یک سوم داستان رو خونده بودم.
و مابقی داستان هم در نشست بعدی تمام شد.
این کتاب اپیک نیست، یا حداقل جلد اول اپیک نبود از نظر من. ما با دوتا دزد روبه روییم که درآمدشون از طریق کاراییه که اشراف بهشون می سپرن. دزدی از خاندان های مختلف، اخاذی، قتل...
و هربار یه کار میگیرن که درآمدش خوبه با خودشون میگن که دیگه میریم سراغ یه کار شرافتمندانه اما...
دزدای ما وجدان دارن، حتی تو بدترین کارشونم دنبال یه نشونه برای انجام کار خوب میگردن، وقتی قول میدن تا پای جون سر قولشون می مونن و به آدمای اطرافشون اهمیت میدن.
خلاصه اینکه ماجراهای این دوتا دزد دوست داشتنی رو بخونید و لذت ببرید.

Why I read it: kept hearing that it was good
The Plot: Royce Melborn, a skilled thief, and his mercenary partner, Hadrian Blackwater make a profitable living carrying out dangerous assignments for conspiring nobles until they become the unwitting scapegoats in a plot to murder the king. Sentenced to death, they have only one way out…and so begins this epic tale of treachery and adventure, sword fighting and magic, myth and legend. It seems like stories about thieves are really big in fantasy right now. I've seen them all over the place. I like the concepts here, though, where they're doing jobs for nobles, and once the story gets going, it's for sure not your typical thief book.
The Characters: I liked the characters, but don't feel we really got to know any of them particularly well. There were a lot of varied characters, and that kept things interesting. Of our two main characters, I definitely liked Hadrian better.
The Setting: This is a pretty typical fantasy world, but the author does a good job of setting it up and making it real, although there are times when he goes a little too far and it takes the reader out of the story.
A Sample of the Writing:
Archibald Ballentyne held the world in his hands, conveniently contained within fifteen stolen letters. Each parchment was penned with meticulous care in a fine, elegant script. He could tell the writer believed that the words were profound and that their meaning conveyed a beautiful truth. Archibald felt the writing was drivel, yet he agreed with the author that they held a value beyond measure. He took a sip of brandy, closed his eyes, and smiled.
Who Should Read This? Fantasy fans who are looking for a good new series.
Final Thoughts: I like that this book was fairly short, and although it's a series, the book itself was pretty self-contained. No crazy cliffhangers here, and that's a huge plus for me. I like reading series, but I also like to not be left hanging, especially when I have no idea when I'll be able to get to the next book. I really wish my library carried these--to get this one, they had to do inter-library loan with a library in another state. I guess I'll have to do that for every book. But the writing was good enough to go through a bit of extra work to read this series, and since I read recently on another blog that the series has been picked up by Orbit, maybe the library will finally decide to get them.

Not a well-written book. The story suffers a lot from pacing issues, and a lot of the writing is just very... awkward? It reads a lot like the work of a beginner author. Most of the characters are completely unconvincing and uninteresting.
Having said all of that, I did manage to finish the book, though not with all that much enthusiasm.
