I can finally understand why this book causes so much strife and discourse between the fans of The Old Kingdom. It all has to do with the love interest and the lack of a plot, or the presence of a plot without really making it interesting? Choose what you will.

I think Nick and Lirael could have been adorable, if Nick wasn't such a dumbass. Every damn chapter that featured him was him playing some sort of fish out of water idiot. Which made me really think because I don't remember him being that much of a dumbass ... then again, I didn't see much of him so maybe I was spared from the dumbass moments? Anyway. When they were cute, they were cute, but then I was reminded of his entire character in this book and it ruined whatever I read.

The plot, when it was focused on, was interesting and one that I didn't see coming. Looking back on it, I didn't really see it coming at all and it's one of those plot lines that I feel that was pulled out of someone's ass. Yet, no matter how much it didn't work, I enjoyed it.

The book lacked the characters of the other books but when they finally made their appearance I was like, eh, too late.

Three stars is a bit too kind, but I was interested and I enjoyed the mess that I read.

People from different cultures have a lot of misunderstandings, don'tcha know? I think it was supposed to be endearing.

More of a typical YA book, whereas Sabriel is ageless and broadly appealing. 2.5 rounding up.

Certainly one of my favorites of the series.
I enjoyed seeing how much Lirel grew from an outcast in the Glaciar to an Abhorsen-in-Waiting of her own right. It feels somewhat of a farewell though, with the appearance of old characters, like Mogget and the Disreputable Dog, and also how Nick and Lirael are now an item.
If it is, I am happy to have walked this path over so many years. If it isn't, I look forward to keep walking it.

This book was an awesome 'end' to the main series, and they handled dealing with Clariel/Chlorr in a surprising way in lieu of the cliche I expected. Plus, getting to see the Disreputable Dog again made me far happier than it had any right to.
