Amari and the night brothers is Percy Jackson with a vivacious BIPOC girl instead of a white boy, the FBI for the paranormal instead of demigod camp and all the better in my opinion. The bigotry and difficulties amari faces as an illusionist parallel her life in the regular world beautifully. My main reason for not giving this 5 stars are that I was able to guess the twists about 30% into the book.

Absolutely loved this! It was pure magic and one of the best chosen one fantasies I’ve ever read. So excited to read the sequel!

Very rarely do I read middle grade novels these days, but Amari and the Night Brothers was definitely one I wanted to try - and I'm so glad I did!

This book was so much fun, kind of like Men in Black of the fantasy realm. I really love the world Alston created, and I found myself laughing out loud more than once. I think the plot fitted nicely within the parameters of this world, and while I did think the pacing could've been a little more even, I had an overall great time with the story.

And then there's Amari, who is just completely realistic, loveable, and so easy to root for. She's a friend I would've loved to have at that age, and I thought the way she interacted with her environments was very well done. Her decisions made perfect sense for the most part, and she was a great pillar to hang the story on.

All in all just a very good time, and I'll definitely pick up the sequel when it comes out!

I’m not sure I know how to rate middle grade fairly being a very grown adult so I’m not rating it. I’m glad this book is out there for kids to get into fantasy.

This was a great book. Loved the magic and schooling to teach them about the paranormal. That was super cool! There was some situations that were handled a little to kiddie for me. But it ya so it's makes since. But the store was amazing! Defiantly gonna have to continue to book two!

I really like this story and it's a great option for students who also love Harry Potter, but want something more contemporary. My only quibble is that the story starts to drag a bit before becoming incredibly rushed towards the end.

Me molesta mucho.
