Right now I really dig Monstress lore and I'd like to feel the same way about characters and the story in the future. Plot is still charming though, despite its simplicity. Hopefully it's gonna get even better in the next volume.

Normally I hate Art Nouveau but here I even kind of enjoyed it - the artwork is just amazing!

This was a gift--- and when I opened it, I was mesmerized by the artwork. Sadly, that is all I was impressed with....and there is a reason it took me two attempts to get through and I ONLY persevered bc...it was a gift.

I cannot even summarize this book because I never figured out what was going on. You enter this book as if you missed the first 2 hours of a movie--- and I had no idea who was what, why, where.... obviously steampunk fantasy (cool!)--- sadly the author that the reader would figure it all out if they kept turning the page. There are slaves--- and there are humans eating the slaves--- not sure why, but I think to get their powers. There are talking, many tailed cats (cool!) and the main character is having a non stop discussion with a "monster" in her head....that some characters can hear and others cannot. There are people hunting for main character--- and people hunting for a mask (again, why?)...and a man with wings shows up to defend the main character--- but then he sets her up-- to then free her ???? I am telling you, I was not made for this book. I hate not understanding what is happening. I get fantasy has freedom to do really cool things, but the reader needs to understand the rules and structure of the world that is created.
Also--- the art was really cool....except there were two creepy manga eyed characters that didn't fit the style of the book. Ugh.

Read? Please don't. Or read and then explain it to me.

I can tell why Neil Gaiman wrote a blurb for this. There are definently moments of the same kind of dark beauty that he writes with, especially in Sandman, and I am so intrigued by the world of Monstress. I want to know more about Maika's past as well as the small cast of characters that seem to be surrounding her. The art in this graphic novel is stunning. I am obsessed with the clothing.

However, it took a while for me to start to understand what was happening. This may be because of the combination of Eastern and Western storytelling or just how much information is being presented to the reader.

Also, for other readers, this is a very graphic a brutal world. I would highly recommend checking the trigger warnings before reading.

I will be continuing the series this month and am looking forward to the next volume.

I feel like this story had so much potential but there was no character or world building. I enjoyed the plot but I was really confused

This. Was. AMAZING!

The art, the storyline, the characters, the development, the representation! This was everything I could have ever asked for in a graphic novel. As someone who has been disappointed by graphic novels and haven't meshed well with them in the past, I am amazed by how attached and enthralled I was by this plot and these characters. If the visuals themselves aren't enough to draw you in, then the story definitely will be.

I can't even sound remotely coherent or professional right now because of how in love with this I am.

I can see why others would like this, with the world building and incredibly detailed art, but it was too gory for me. I also finished the book not really liking and therefore caring about anyone in particular, so won't be continuing the series

Pretty good. In terms of atmosphere it has a Full Metal Alchemist feel, with science-magic and mysterious horrors, some with tentacles, possibly humans-turned-demons. The worlding is interesting. According to the short lectures of the esteemed Professor Tam Tam, which are interspersed between the chapters of the volume and provide most of the history, you have: the Old Gods (Cthulhu, anyone?), the Humans, the Ancients, the Half-breeds (Arcanics), and the Cats. Having just finished binge reading Saga, the interbreeding between the Ancients and the Humans that formed the Arcanics, plus the whole setting of war between races, was a familiar set-up. But my interest is piqued so far.

I just hate how they're doing that thing again where the people you think are your enemies turn out to be friends, and vice versa. What's up with Tuya, and Atena and her brother? And don't think I've forgotten about Ilsa's daughter. Next thing you know that cute little fox Kippa is actually a spy, and Yvette has been Mariko's friend all along. Eugh. But we shall see.
