Del Maclean has created a captivating continuation of the series, even if the plot is somewhat more predictable than in the previous book. Despite the familiar elements, Maclean's captivating narrative style managed to immerse me in the intricately drawn and multi-layered characters. As well as skilfully explores the complexities of desire and its impact on human emotions. The intertwining storylines keep you interested and the unexpected twists at the end add an exciting dimension to the narrative. Overall, the novel is a satisfying sequel that is a joy to read.

3.5 rounded up. Liked the mystery part of this story, but felt the delivery was a little awkward at times. Too many characters and possible plots to keep track easily.

Oh my gosh, what a ride this book turned out to be! I had some concerns that Dal MacLean’s sophomore novel wouldn’t live up to her absolutely stellar debut but I needn’t have been concerned. Object of Desire was equally as thrilling, engrossing and entertaining as Bitter Legacy. And that was despite making one of her MCs incredibly frustrating and, at times, damn near unlikeable.

I loved the mystery, with it’s twists, turns and red herrings (one plot twist that had me gasping out loud as I ran out of my room muttering “no way, no fucking way”) that kept me guessing right up until the very end. Dal MacLean has created an intricate but entirely coherent plot that will please mystery lovers and anyone who loves police procedurals.

I don’t want to go into any details about the story because when it comes to mysteries, the less you know is better. But you can have faith that this book delivers a tight, fast-paced storyline that will keep you engrossed throughout.

I love this author's books, they give me everything I want. Characters that are flawed and treat each other badly, and an incredibly plotty thriller.

This book was a bit confusing by audiobook? It had a lot of new characters that you’re supposed to keep up with and lots and lots people lying to keep off track. I did like this book slightly more than Bitter Legacy. This had all new characters but we did see some cameos from James and Ben.

Trigger warnings for brutal descriptions of mutilations of humans and a cat.

second chance romance isn't my favorite trope, but i obviously had to get my hands on the second installment of the bitter legacy series because i can trust this author to show out when it comes to delivering quality writing, interesting characters, and a wholly unique mystery. but while she unsurprisingly succeeded in those fields, it pains me to admit that the central focus being mainly on the mystery came at the cost of fleshing out tom and will's rekindled romance.

although i found the romance aspect somewhat lacking, the writing itself was enough to keep me invested (i'd read dal maclean's version of the yellow pages tbh), not to mention the fact that the mystery and details surrounding it were developed and intriguing on their own. i constantly found myself switching theories while trying to pinpoint the guilty party, never knowing for certain who the killer was. let's just say that i was definitely paranoid and suspicious of every single character at least once.

maclean's strong love of mysteries and thrillers seeps through every page of her work, something that i feel largely sets her apart from other authors trying their hand at the genres who perhaps don't have the same level of respect and adoration for them.

it's also clear that she has a soft spot for flawed and imperfect characters, which i love because flaws can sometimes add to their relatability and authenticity.

even though the man was juggling three (3) different guys who were desperately in love with him—not to mention an obsessed stalker vying for his attention—tom could be... less than likable at times. him stewing because will didn't want to spend any more time with him than strictly necessary after tom literally shattered his heart had me wanting to shake him by the shoulders. like fuck, put yourself in his shoes bro
