4.5. Really loved this! Alternating narration and time periods really set the scene.

A great story, beautifully written, if slightly convoluted. I think it could have benefited from being told chronologically. Some of the story is lost in all the jumping back and forth.

3.5 stars. This is definitely a beach book, but a pretty well-written one, until it ebbed a little at the end. But all in all, a good entertaining summer read.

I really enjoyed this book, particularly given the setting on the Northeast coast of the country that I am not that familiar with. The writing was strong, the characters were complex, and there was a plot shift that was unexpected. Great fast, summer read!

Not what I expected based on title--I was thinking a group of women summering away from their husbands on an island. Not even close, although there is an island (fictional, based on Fisher's Island, I think).
Story is about Miranda, Isobel, and Joseph and their parents, told over 3 summer months in 1930, 1951, and 1969. In 1951, the 3 are 18-20ish; young love & secrets from 1930. 1969 is the resolution (I think; only 85% done).
I thought the most interesting character was Isobel's mother, The Countess, who only briefly appeared, and would much rather have heard all of her story!
Done. The ending was obvious for about the whole of the book. Not impressed.

I felt like the main plot started really late and then the rest of the story was rushed and consolidated into the last 10% of the book.

This was sitting on my to be read shelf for far too long! Historical fiction is my jam and this was great. I was immediately drawn into the world of Miranda Schuyler and the characters in her life. As a young woman we get a glimpse into her new world as the stepdaughter of a notorious man of the elite of Winthrop Island. We see her fall for the lobster fisherman immediately and fall into a whirlwind of a summer. Then we meet her later on after she returns to the island she was banished from all those years ago. We get to see her navigate the social hierarchy and basically not give a crap what other people think. She’s confident in her convictions and is trying to clear the name of the man she loves. It’s a beautiful story with tragedy, love and some Shakespeare! I love Beatriz Williams and she’s quickly become one of my favorite historical fiction authors! Bravo on another great read!

Libby audio. BOTM selection, owned. Not my favorite of this author’s. And I actually think she is a stronger author when writing with her 2 besties.
