Tough read, both in terms of the non-chronological stream-of-consciousness writing style and the subject matter. I'm glad I read [b:The Door|497499|The Door|Magda Szabó|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1175252169l/497499._SY75_.jpg|485644] first, which like this one follows the uneasy relationship between two very different women, but on the other hand feels less controlled and deliberate, and the emotions more exaggerated -- which makes sense, as it's one of the author's earliest books. I'm still glad I read it, and I plan on reading more by Magda Szabo.
