Having just finished it, I feel like someone punched my in the gut.
It’s a great book with a beautiful love story that will leave you wrenched and your heart will be teared open.
My emotions are so over the place that I don’t even know if what I’m writing makes sense in English or not. That’s how affected I am.

Okay, after taking that out of my chest, let’s talk about the book.

This is book 6 in the series but I would actually call it book 0 or the prequel.
In this book we get to see how everything started and who was the Winston family before the story we all know and love.

We get to know the Jethro who was part of a biker gang, the Cletus who said everything he wanted without a care in the world or the Ashley that existed before Chicago.
But most importantly, we learn about Billy and Scarlet and their story is one for the ages.

I think I’m just gonna leave my thoughts and feelings in here and not talk about the books, at least not yet, because it is still too raw and I think you’ll get enough book descriptions anyway.

Let’s hope I get to sleep after this and not wallow in the sadness and the despair.

I'm not a prequel person so I probably should have skipped this.the pain and abuse need all the content warnings.

I'm broken. I needed this book and yet I'm broken by it, too.

Penny Reid does something in the Winston Brothers books that she has not done for me before. These books are lyrical. I never understood what that meant before, but I do now. They are magic and they convey love and loss in ways other authors have not done for me.

This book will haunt me. I know it will. I'm hoping that #7 will put me back together again.

ALSO: Eleventy billion thumbs up for the narrators. My goodness. They have simply made every book they narrate. I don't know if these books would be as powerful for me if it weren't for them. I would listen to these books over and over and over just for how they communicate Penny's words.

ah okay this one made everything fall right into place and i actually really loved this prequel. i think it was necessary in the series and especially before billy and scarlet’s full present day novel. with the plot of the final book in the series, i’m glad we got the full picture before jumping into it because there’s so much info in this one and the final book (i’m writing this after listening to the final one)

both scarlet and billy’s characters were sweet and kind and this really made all their live more tragic. i did enjoy this but read cw’s before reading !

Finished this last night at 1:30am because I couldn’t put it down. Billy is my favorite winston and Claire’s story is so heartbreaking. What a pure love. I can’t wait to see their reunion in the last book in the series! It’s going to be so tremendously satisfying.

Did I sob all the water out of my body? Yes. Would I recommend this if you know this family? Yes. Will it break you? Absolutely. BUT YOU HAVE TO DO IT!
