yeah, I would not call it romantic, but I enjoyed it. These old write authors always hit you with the casual racism.

Like most Classics, this started out fairly slow. I still enjoyed the story! But I did start to wonder if there was a point to it other than wandering around the estate and being (figuratively) haunted by Rebecca. But when the story picked up, it picked up very quickly, and it left a very strong impression on me.

The thing is - I'm writing this review months after I read it, and I still can't identify any specific feelings I have about this book. But I can say that this is a book that's going to stick with me for a very long time - if not forever. In a good way... I think...

"Happiness is not a possession to be prized, it is a quality of thought, a state of mind."

This book is haunting, and chilling to the bone. What's most interesting to me is the fact that most of the drama doesn't actually happen, but is just the narrator's dreams and fantasies.
Rebecca, written by Daphne du Maurer, revolves around a girl consumed by her love to Maxim de Winter, struggling to find her own identity and fitting into life at Manderley after the death of his first wife, Rebecca.
The atmosphere in this book is ominous and ethereal at the same time. Most of the writing revolves around dreams, flashbacks or fantasies the narrator has as she recalls life at Manderley, with a juxtaposition between beauty and tragedy, often being interlinked. The first-person narration gives the story a view in the narrator's inner battles, and the story would've been completely different if written in third-person perspective, as the narrator's insecurities and thoughts are what offer the book such an ominous, uncertain feeling.
The characters are written in a very complex way, with the author breaking the black-and-white, hero-vs-villain stereotypes. The characters are morally-grey, leaving it up to the reader to choose who they think is in the right, and who's the antagonist.
Overall, if you enjoy medium to fast paced mysteries, I recommend you read this book right here.

My Grandma always spoke reverently of this book so when she had to pass it on I was excited to take it. I was not aware however that it was a Gothic novel. Dark and foreboding with a touch of morbid is not exactly my style.
I appreciated how the rampant immorality of one character was treated but could not agree with the murder another committed. The book rather expected you to condemn the former because you didn't like the character, and excuse the latter because you loved that character. It didn't touch on the fact that right and wrong are still black and white regardless of how provoked the person might be.
This was a book I couldn't put down but it left me feeling rather down and depressed by its darkness.
