This book is weird! A lot of absurde metaphors for love. 
But seeing this doomed love story from the perspective of a teenager living in a beautiful place in Italy is so incredibly magnificent and really makes you fall in love with it!

His obsession was so well written, but if you don't understand him it might irk you off. The plot was boring but the characters were likeable enough to read just for them. The book is incredibly well written with a lot of gorgeous and relatable quotes. It has this cohesive way of presenting
a relationship from the early stages till the end and after the end as well as the cocktail of emotions people from LGBTQ+ community face when finding themselves
 
An amazing summer read the vibes of rural Italy are unmatched. There are some weird and vile scenes but overall a good book.

What annoyed me the most about this book is that at times Andre Aciman was so comfortabl writing about explicit and VILE scenes however when it came to the word sex he always referred to it as " love making " ???? Just say it as it is. 
I gave 2.5 stars mainly for the poetic / lyrical writing aswell as aesthetic but that's all. 
There are so many better books out there with LGBTQ+ romance and characters that dont romantacise  grooming and pedophilia.

While there’s a plot, it has no substance. It’s pedophilia disguised as a teen’s first summer fling that ends in heartbreak because they were never meant to be in the first place. And it feels as if the queer aspects of it were to hide the pedophilia. Even though I hated Lolita due to how intimately you get to know Herbert Herbert’s thoughts, I’d rather torture myself by rereading that. 

Lastly, this could be due to the amount of horror stuff but Élio had the potential to be a yandere and even though I knew from the get-go that wouldn’t be happened, I’m disappointed that it didn’t go in that direction.

I had heard some awful things about this and I wanted to hate read it. (If you don't support hate reading, get out.) I didn't even make it past part one. It's so bad.

I was fairly aware of the age gap, but I didn't know the full extent. This includes a 24-year-old man being involved with a 17-year-old. That's pedophilia. I don't care about your "well the age of consent is..." arguments. No. No one in their mid twenties should be attracted to anyone that still has their age ending in teen.

And it's not even that this book is about or focuses on pedophilia. It's that it's romanticized. Incredibly! If it were focused in a problematic view, it could be better. But still not good.

Not to mention that the writing is just horrible. Like, it's just awful. Even if the events above didn't take place, I would still hate this book.

After reading a few reviews for this, I've also learned that the author is confirmed to be a pedophile and finding attraction to underage girls. Gross!  🤮
