Book two of a current four book series expands on the mysterious death of Elizabeth Holland and the social upheavals that ensue. Not quite as delicious as the first book, but with enough plot turns and changes in fortune plus a surprise ending to make me want to read the third.

This is the second book in the Luxe series and this book has shifted direction in a lot of ways. Elizabeth has moved to California to be with Will and that has really added a new dimension as now there is the "wild west" in addition to the gilded New York ballrooms. I am really liking this series; Godbersen has done a great job of creating these flawed (and sometimes ridiculous) characters that lend themselves to a fun, faux-historical storyline.

Well, here's another super quick read, and definitely just as trashy and entertaining as the first in the series. Oh, what these crazy girls won't get up to. The backstabbing and nastiness is amplified in this entry, as well as the sheer scandal. Such fluffy reading, but it again as that train wreck quality.
The ending was pretty brutal, and did make me want to go back and slap Elizabeth a few times for some really terrible decisions. I'll be curious to see how the ramifications pan out on that one...I really doubt it'll be as simple as it seemed.

This is book two in The Luxe series. If you haven't read this book then I highly recommend, not only this book but the whole series. The series is set in 1899 and 1900 and is about four young women. It tells the story of their lives, loves and promiscuity. It is beautifully written and transports the reader back to the time of beautiful dresses and woman who had to marry to benefit their families. I have to mention that I was really impressed by the historical research that went into the series, the author went to great lengths to include plenty of details which gave the books the feeling of authenticy. Now if you haven't read the the first book, I can't say anymore without giving away major plot points, STOP!
For those that have read the first book, I loved the way Elizabeth rode off into the sunset with Will. The fact that Diana and Penelope knew that Elizabeth wasn't dead turned out to have a devastating effect on her life in this book. My dislike for Penelope grew intensely throughout this book, along with my sympathy and understanding for Diana.
The one thing that stood out during these books is that these young girls where at the mercy of their families. They had no opportunity to make any decisions about their education, their relationships, the social activities they attended, not even their friends. I think that's what kept the pages turning so quickly for me, I keep wanting and hoping that three of them will get their happy ever after and one of them will go straight to hell!
I enjoyed this book so much that I went straight onto the third book Envy and will post the review for that soon.

So good. Love the stuff about Lina, sorry Carolina now. Can't wait until Penelope gets what's coming to her. And the ending?? Unexpected & completely heartbreaking...

Listen....this is not the greatest book/series ever written. It's not necessarily historically accurate as other people have noted and it's essentially the same archetype characters of Gossip Girl dressed up in more elaborate clothing. But is it a great read when you're just looking for an easy, drama-filled YA read? Yep. And I was in the mood for that kind of a read so it's getting 4 stars. Just take it for what it is and enjoy!

I must have been in vacation mode when I read the first book. I enjoyed the mindless, girly romances and descriptions of ballgowns and silks. The second in the series is more of the same, trivial and uneventful and dull. The last fifty pages read much more quickly but the book became more of a chore than entertainment.
