It’s like Jonathan Franzen if he couldn’t write.

Yes, it took 8 months to finish this damn book. I couldn't give a thoughtful review if I tried. Writing was good. Plot was slow. Some interesting content. But, seriously eight months?! Starting reading my next book a week ago and I'm halfway through.

After a promising beginning, this book began to annoy me more and more. Phillips can't write a convincing female character to save his life, and the wit that graces the novel's opening pages is entirely absent by the end. I read this—I don't know, two years ago? Three?—and it still makes me vaguely mad. (Though that may say more about me than it does about Phillips.)

So far this book is just plain boring. If it doesn't improve soon I'm giving up on it, my reading list is too long for boring books.

I give up. I have too many other books to read that are actually interesting in the first 50 pages.

I started this one a few years ago, but couldn't get into it. I picked it up again a couple of weeks ago and this time around I love it. Go figure.

Finally finished it. I enjoyed it, but I think the experience of reading it will be forever tempered by the fact that it took me so long to read. It's not the book's fault, and I shouldn't hold that against it, but I will say that I am glad I finally made it through.

starts out well, but around halfway through goes downhill fast. i didn't care to finish the book, after reading 80% of it, because i just could not muster any feeling about the characters.

It took me a little while to get into this book, but once I did I really enjoyed it. I'm glad John Price turned out to be the more focal point of the novel, though I was also interested in Mark Payton, and am a little sad about where his character arc went.

This book is nostalgic and deals with history and Europe, so of course I'm going to like it.
