First impressions review... maybe I will come back and beef it up later.

I've been juggling a few books but nothing has really been able to snag and keep my attention. I mean, 2020 was a psychotic bitch and we are all trying to make it through the next stage of this never ending pandemic so there is a LOT to compete with in my head.

So.. color me surprised when I thought.... "ooooh Rockstar book... let me just read the first chapter before bed." Terrible idea. TERRIBLE. It's been so long since a book held me in my grip and made me stay up WAY late that I was unprepared.

The good: I read it straight through. I loved the premise of the book and really enjoyed the characters for the most part. I mean, Ash wasn't as dominant as I'd have liked and Skye wasn't written as consistently as she could have been, but it wasn't significant enough to impact my enjoyment. Yes, it was insta-lovey but it wasn't gross insta-love (for me anyway). So story engagement was high as I wanted to see how the Doctor folded into the world of the Rock Star.

The less then Good: The author took on some major lifting with the history she created for our h, Skye. A tortured background that left her with severe PTSD and emotional scars. The issues were so intensely serious. Yet, the author never really gave them the weight that they deserved. I'm all about suspending belief but c'mon. The last 40% of the story wasn't as focused as it could have been, reverted to a heavy case of "telling vs showing" and tried to incorporate multiple different issues that eclipsed the relationship. The ending was a total cop-out and I really felt like the author wrote herself into a corner and didn't know how to get out of it.

This book would have been fantastic if she spent more time focused on the relationship between two very different people trying to merge seemingly impossible lives together and the chaos that generated from that. Or, if she gave page time to Skye's journey to recovery.

All that being said, I'm totally reading the the next installment.

Very unexpected surprise. Certain aspects were amazing such as the connection between Summer and Bean. I also liked Ash. Other aspects like the band members and their reactions were meh for me. Still a very plausible story and I will look for more from this author in the future.

I loved the story of Summer and Ash! I’m a sucker for rock star stories and this one is top notch! Ellie Masters has a knack for bringing characters and their stories to life. I love Ash and how open and honest he is about what he wants and what he is willing to do or not do to have Summer as his own. I hate the pain Summer went through in her past.. and I really hate Spencer!

I do love how they work through everything together!

You can't build a legit relationship when both people are lying about fundamental elements of who they are.

It was okay

Skye Summers is a doctor at a hospital in DC while Ash Dean is a rockstar who happens to be passing through the area. They meet at a coffee shop and from there things escalate. All too quickly they’re thrown into a marriage they didn’t know they signed up for and Skye’s traumatic past keeps them distant from the one thing they should be close with.

The book had decent writing, but the story tried so hard to focus on Skye’s past, without giving it the emotional weight it needed. She had triggers, but it wasn’t enough to keep me invested in her growth. She never really had much growth to begin with, but the more her dark past got revealed the less it mattered, because she didn’t react in a way that made me care about her struggle.

Ash was a more likable character. He didn’t have a bad past that kept him stuck in a rut, he was a very present person which was refreshing. However, he was quick to rush into things and it made the romance kind of quick and hard to keep up with.

Heart's Insanity: An Angel Fire Rock Romance
By: Ellie Masters
Narrated by: Amanda Stribling

This isn't your cookie cutter rock band romance! Ellie Masters has formulated a story that broke my heart and put it back together again. Skye is an emergency room doctor who works long hours. Ash is the lead singer for Angel Fire. Yes, their relationship is the main draw to the story, but there is a very complex background for both characters woven into the fabric. Masters has given Skye a childhood no one would ever wish for and it effects every aspect of her life. It is written as the horror it was, and at the same time gives Skye a fortitude to carry on and create a new life for herself. Ash has demons of his own that he is extricating, but he is a man that knows what he wants and his alpha tendency will stop at nothing to achieve it. Together these two are sweet, frustrating, loving and hopeful. Throw in a supporting cast that we love like Bean and hate like Spenser and it's an angsty, wonderful love story told with compassion.

Amanda Stribling nails this narration. For each character, she has a specific voice and is able to emulate the feelings so easily that I could feel the pain and look for the hope. She is coming into her own and I find her performances flow easily and are very enjoyable.

Explosive

This book made my heart explode! Even though Heart's Insanity is a stand alone book, it becomes richer if you read Ashes to New, which takes us into the tormented childhood of Skye and Bean. When Skye meets Ash she is a successful doctor who has overcome some daunting life obstacles. For Ash it is "love at first sight" and he is willing to love her and help her no matter what it takes to free Skye from her demons. This book made my heart believe that love can conquer all! Bravo Ellie Masters to once again writing a magnificent book.
