I listened to this as an audiobook and the narration was great, which really added to the story I think. It was slow paced, but built or rather descending in to increasing paranoia. I love an unreliable narrator that leaves you questioning what you do and do not know and what is real. Things like the ambiguous time period also contributed to this and worked well I thought.
Quite dark subject matter and the ending I didn't think was as punchy as it could have been but a really strong debut and I'd be interested to read more from this author in the future.

I picked this up at a secondhand bookshop as I needed something to read on my flight home and it was recommended on the What Page are you On? podcast. My fault for not checking the content warnings but
the rape references were much more graphic and frequent than I was expecting, which goes somehow to explaining my bad feelings towards the book - I've tried not to let that reflect the rating too much.

Compelling at first, with a strong sense of voice, but grew tedious and repetitive over the course of the book. I think this story would have worked better as a novella, with a tighter structure to make the middle section pacier and the ending less abrupt.

304 delightful pages of a woman’s unraveling. the pace was slow and a sometimes felt deeply confusing, but i think that was intended. i wanted more about the son, Jonathan. sometimes it felt overly confusing and fever-dream like with not enough reality check-ins to have the reader feel cared for. very uncertain of time period? i find myself with so many questions about her mental health, and childhood experiences. it just felt like there were some holes. but the writing style worked for me - haunting and detail rich. can definitely see it working well as a streaming service original series
