The third in the series and as I have said before the cases in each book are self contained, but I would say that there is definitely character development that you would miss if you read them out of order. And why would you when they start with letters in the alphabet in a row!
This third book takes the focus and shifts it to the lead partner in the law firm, Bennie Rosato. Like the other two books, the reader gets a full picture of Bennie. I loved reading about her family and getting to know the person behind the lawyer.
This book and the case were different from the previous two. The young man that asks her to represent him in a murder case is someone from her past and the book goes back in time to tell the full story of how they met and what happened then to compel her to take his case now in the present. The thing I loved about this book was that she was a seasoned lawyer, but she was out of her element representing a murder suspect.

Bennie Rosato is a lawyer who represents a juvenile (Jason) who is wrongly sent to a detention center at 12 years old. The book covers this time period-- when Jason was a 12 year old boy-- and when he is in his 20s and she represents him again for something completely different.
The story left me wanting to be like and Bennie and really empathizing for Jason and all juvenile offenders.
A tiny bit slow to progress in some of the court room chapters, but overall I really enjoyed it. I am looking forward to reading more from Scottoline's "Rosato & Dinunzio" series.

I enjoyed this book even though at times I thought it was slow. Too much court room to me. I still would recommend this book. I gave it a 4 star because of the courtroom.

I really liked the narrator of the audio version. And loved the detailed trial transcript approach.
Unlike most other reviewers I did like the Declan love story.
I also liked the fact that Bennie did not demonize the kids in the 2002 part of the plot.
Loved her investigator Lou.
But things that bugged me:
* repeated (many!) references to Bennie's mouth "going dry."
* the idea that neither Bennie nor Declan dated in the 12 years apart
* Bennie believing that the miscarriage was her fault.
What killed me:
At one point Bennie makes a trial decision - and explains that if Jason is acquitted, she doesn't want the prosecutor to have grounds for an appeal! Um if Jason gets off, prosecutor CANNOT appeal given double jeopardy.

Bennie Rosato the queen of the firm is as a hard-as-nails brash lawyer - and proud of it. In this novel we get to see a different side of her. She is more vulnerable in Corrupted. She is defending a past client - a client she felt she had let down. Jason, her 13-year old client, was sent to juvenile detention for getting into a fight with his bully. Now years later, that bully is murdered and Jason is again facing jail time unless Bennie can win this time.
We also get to see a bit of romance with Bennie and a love interest. Both the romance and caring for Jason has given Bennie a bit of a more softness without taking away her skills as a lawyer and leader.
