Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC of this book. All opinions are my own!
I don’t know if I have words? I love dark and twisty, but this was next level.
TW: child death, talk of death
This was absolutely spell binding. I was encapsulated from the first chapter. The concept behind this book is so different and so well executed. Also the yearning? Top notch. I can’t get over that. The tropes within this book are very specific, but right up my alley.
This book follows Logan as she heads with Alejo, one of her fathers, to meet her other father Brandon in their hometown Snakebite. But, going home brings darkness and it doesn’t seem as if there’s any light in sight.
What beautiful character building. Each one of these characters were complex, but understandable. The plot was well thought out and executed. The words flowed well together, connecting the characters, the plot and everything in between. I absolutely ADORED this!
Gays ghost hunting? Yeah. Sign me up. Every single time.
True rating: 4.5/5

Thank you to Netgalley and Wednesday Books for this arc!
The Dead and the Dark was a perfectly creepy and dark book that I definitely needed right now! Missing teenagers, ghost hunting dads, a lurking darkness in the woods near an abandoned cabin, family secrets, teenagers trying to solve this mystery, a town with a name like Snakebite - basically everything I love. There were times I had to put this away for the night because I was alone and actually creeped out. The beginning was a little slow, and the ending was a little too perfect for me, but the whole middle part was SO GOOD. I really liked both Ashley and Logan and thought their character development was very well done. The family dynamic was so sad in the beginning but very heartwarming at the end too (but also hella dark).
This comes out on 08/03 and would be a PERFECT YA thriller to get you in the fall mood. Definitely need more from this author - her next book according to GR comes out in 2022 (Echo Sunset) and is described as a supernatural thriller following 2 sisters as they are lead to an isolated town in ARIZONA (neeeeeed).

I LOVED THIS BOOK! It’s so delightful creepy, eerie, ominous, and it is amazing! I felt like I was plopped into this book. The prose is so vivid, the characters are so well crafted and developed, and the plot was oh so twisty! It has lovely LBGTQIA+ rep, which I loved. I also really enjoyed the pacing of this book! The mystery was fabulous and constantly kept me on my toes.
This was a stunning debut and I will absolutely be picking up everything else that Courtney Gould writes! I loved everything about this book—the characters, the writing, the plot, the atmosphere!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Dead and the Dark is an emotional glance into what love really means. The ending was a bit abrupt, in that the denouement brushed more than a few items under the rug, but overall it was thrilling and a good read.
