This upper-end YA sfnal romance continues to be a standout.

While I found the central motivator for the plot to be a bit of a maguffin hunt (
Spoilerwhy the evil guy had to send her on various errands and not just destroy everything himself wasn't really convincing
), the opportunity to explore various possible dimensions, speculate about physics, time, and the universe, and above all, explore all the permutations of love and aspects of relationships, was nifty enough to catapult this book far above "second book slump."

I thoroughly enjoyed the way that Gray handled her love triangle, which goes out of the way to avoid falling into the same old tired tropes. The different versions of the two guys, and the way they interact with Marguerite--and how she makes mistakes with her assumptions, then learns--kept me immersed in the story.

I love the writing, from the emotional tones to the little moments (art, music, mundane things noticed that make a place distinctive), with high marks for the whole Russiaverse sequence, such a contrast to a couple of the other dimensions.

I also enjoyed the fast-paced, vivid action sequences, the variety of the dimensions, and the further development of Marguerite's family (including her sister Josie getting a much larger, and unexpected, role) added to my enjoyment.

There are some tantalizing hints about what may come, and be warned! This book ends on the cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers, making me desperate to read the next.

I'd say this book is for upper end YA as there is sexual content--and the consequences are honestly, and engagingly, explored.

That cliff-hanger was downright cruel.

I liked this better than the first book, but quite often I didn't like the actions of the main character. And does every series book have to end in a cliffhanger now?

The main character is TRASH and this story has gotten so ridiculous.

Review after rereading:

I love Paul so much!! He is amazing, so, obviously it was sad that he was barely in this book, which is understandable since the book was about Marguerite trying to get him back. However, seeing the other versions of Paul, that were also gentlemen in love with Marguerite, (for the most part!!) made up for it.

Ten thousand skies, and a million worlds, and it still wouldn’t be enough for me to share with you. Nothing less than forever will do.

Unsurprisingly, I love the love triangle and how both Theo and Paul are in love with Marguerite and are very open about it, even though Marguerite doesn’t feel the same, in Theo’s case.

All the different dimensions are so interesting, (even the Mafiaverse), and they are my favourite part about this series, I can’t wait for the ones to come.

I hate that it ends in a cliffhanger considering I don’t yet have the next book to read. And it’s so sad that after everything she went through to get Paul back he doesn’t think they should be together

Better than the first - and WHAT IS UP WITH THAT ENDING?

Started this on audio, but like the first Firebird title, it was awful. Way over the top dramatic, which took away from the story. Finished in print, and will definitely read the next without going near the audio.

Did I mention the ending? Still a little freaked out.
