Not continuing the series. Just slow pacing and very heavy historical fiction elements not my thing. Loved the first book a lot though.

Not as good as the first one, but still enjoyable and heartwarming. The sweet loving relationship between Temeraire and Laurence was (as it also was in the first book) the best part of the book. They are so cute together and they share such genuine affection for each other that makes heart swell. This one was much slower paced than the first one, but that is to be expected as they were on a nearly year long journey to China. While there was still a great deal of action there was considerably less than the first book because of the characters long confinement on the ship (and then later to the palace). However even though there was less action the action that was present was great and will keep you on the edge of your seat. The main thing that made this much less enjoyable than the first one was the story's reliance on angst. Most of the book was the Chinese envoy and Prince trying to woo Temeraire way from Laurence. This lead to some great scenes that developed Temeraire and Laurence's relationship and strengthen their bond but also lead to unnecessary jealousy (on Laurence's part) and temper tantrums (on Temeraire's). This was a large portion of the book, the back and forth mood swings of Temeraire and Laurence because of the meddling of the Chinese envoy and boredom, could be boring and repetitive at times.

Overall not as good as the first but still fun, and Temeraire and Laurence' give me life!

How do you make dragons, bonded with their companions, commonplace in the 1800s, a war raging between France (Napoleon) and Britain with visits to China to be boring?

It's really an impressive (but disappointing) feat. I like Laurence a lot, and Temeraire is wonderful. But this book is so slow and boring! And the stuffiness of the narration makes it that much slower feeling.
