Four Stars because the book wasn’t awful. It wasn’t amazing but it was enjoyable enough.

3.5 stars.
The mystery portion was too good, though, romance was there in bits and I would have loved more of it.

I didn't see the twists coming. Started and completed in a go today.

Not a bad book in and of itself--although I didn't like the end much--but one thing that really stood out to me, and indeed made me dock it a star, was a factual error. The character mentions a comic written by "a bunch of members of The Dresden Dolls." Not only have the Dols only ever had two members, but the character is supposed to be a music expert. I'd accept it from anyone who wasn't supposed to be a comic book lover, and music-expert. I think I know where it came from--Dolls front woman Amanda Palmer once wrote a graphic novel with friend Jason Webley, never a Doll himself--but that doesn't excuse the inaccuracy. I thought maybe because they're less mainstream, but my sixty-four year-old mother knew who the Dresden Dolls were years before I got into them through Amanda's music.

It's a small glitch that most people wouldn't notice, I get that, but it really made me take the entire book less seriously.

Playlist for the Dead is a story about Sam, who’s best and only friend, Hayden commits suicide. Hayden leaves Sam with a note, a playlist of 27 songs which seem to have a hidden meaning to them. As Sam begins to decipher the songs, he learns more and more about Hayden’s life that was not ever shared with him. As he discovers the reasons to why Hayden killed himself, he meets Astrid. Through out his journey, he figures out more about Hayden, and realizes that Astrid is more than what she seems.
I found this book very well written and enjoyable. Falkoff is able to convey Sam’s growth as a person and how he overcomes Hayden’s death with the pressures being put on him. One part which I didn’t really like is how Sam’s grief is not really portrayed in the duration of the book. Overall, I enjoyed this book a lot and would recommend it.

This would be a 3.5-star book for me if I had that option. The main characters were sympathetic and engaging, and the writing style was direct and solid. I also liked the elements of mystery to it. As you might guess from the title, the book is pretty depressing overall. But it does have uplifting moments. It was a quick read that kept me busy while I was suffering from a stomach bug yesterday.

Funny thing here is that the synopsis is pretty far off from the actual story.

It's pretty much good to stand up on its own, the story. But if you're pretty keen on stories sticking to their synopsis and dust jacket descriptions, then you're probably gonna dislike this.

I mean the synopsis rounds out and about what actually happens, it's still pretty deceiving because what really happened will pretty much seem a little less than what you could have expected?

So, if you're setting your expectations real high for this, drop them right now. I'm not saying this because they wouldn't meet those expectations; I'm saying this because you just have to jive in on what's happening and enjoy the ride because this novel is promising.

I liked how this book was written; it isn't wordy and it gets straight to the point, kind of how a YA fiction must be written. The story, however, didn't pull that much heartstrings on me. I was also a bit disappointed that the resolution given wasn't what I was expecting.
