An excellent starter resource for families and young kids (maybe 5 - 13? somewhere around that age range, though teenagers could definitely learn a thing or two as well).

Note - if an updated version was released in 2022 or 2023, I would likely rate it 5 stars, it just so happens that I'm reading it 7 years after the initial publication and some language and framing has shifted

Inclusive and informative! I can see why the bigots are mad about it but this is a great way to start communicating with your kids.

What a wonderful book. I read this book because it was on the banned and challenged book list from the American Library Association. So, of course, I had to read it. It is so full of information without being too much. It talks about pretty much everything about sex and bodies. It doesn't go into detail about everything but I think the main thing that is said throughout the book is for young people to find someone they trust if they have questions or concerns. The illustrations in the book are great and not done in a gratuitous way. Everyone has a butt and the book shows a few kids butts and some grownup butts.

There are some people who are upset and think this book is bad. Well, all they have to do is say "it's not for me" and walk away. They don't want anyone to read it. I say parents and guardians need to read it and see if it is a book that would benefit the kids they are responsible for and not worry about what others say.

This book was really interesting to me. I especially appreciated the section that explained "secret touching" to kids. It's a really delicate subject, and this book handled it in a clear, respectful, and understandable way.

Oct 2019: We are ready to cover some of the topics in this book, particularly safe touch, consent, self touch, review all relevant parts and every gender can like/do anything. We aren't ready for the whole book yet, so we've flagged relevant parts. We are having some issues with the whimsical and non-race-based coloring in the book. My guy is a literal thinker. He's already confusing the green hairy chest with the Hulk and now talks about the Hulk's nipples and what country green people come from.

Oct 2018: This book is really great. The diversity of characters, families, abilities, body sizes, relationships, points of view—it seems like everyone can feel represented and find a character or personality type they can resonate with. It’s too advanced for our son at this moment, but it’s at the top of my list for the next stage of this discussion.

There was alot of good stuff in this book, and it really sets kids up for being more understanding later in life. I'm not sure that this is a book I would just put in a kids' hands and be like, "There you go!"- because stuff is confusing. I don't have a great way to explain gender identity to kids, but this didn't really clear it up: "Maybe you're called a boy but you know you're a girl. You know how girls are treated and what they do. That's how you want to be treated and what you want to do." p 84 Like... it's just a little confusing. I don't think it's one for reading in one sitting, either- maybe just for opening to the relevant section when approaching the topic.
