This story is so well researched and written in a way that keeps you engaged and makes you want to know what happened next. Krakauer took care to dig deep into why Chris never made it out of the Alaskan wilderness, making sure he wasn’t just writing him off as inexperienced and ill prepared. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.

Side note: The only part of the book I didn’t care for were the 20 pages or so where Krakauer went into his own story; while it’s interesting that he found Chris’ life to be relatable, I don’t think it added anything of value and I felt myself wanting to skip ahead to get back into the story that was being told.

Alaska scares the shit out of me. After reading [b:The Great Alone|34912895|The Great Alone|Kristin Hannah|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1501852423l/34912895._SY75_.jpg|56275107] , I was already a little spooked but thought the fictional depiction was a little over-dramatized. After reading this, however, I have decided: Alaska scares the shit out of me.

Christopher's story was incredible, as was every sub-story they compared it to. I was intrigued and really did like the book. It could get a little draggy due to me not caring about terrain type stuff, but that was necessary for the book just not my thing.

In the debate of if McCandless was ignorant and self-centered to which it killed him, or if he truly was a figure to admire. I think both are true. I didn't really like McCandless when he was described, because I was trying to imagine if he were talking to me, I would probably want to punch the guy. That being said, I did respect the hell out of him. To live in the wild with no ties to humanity or modern technology, and do it (semi) successfully, well I'll be damned. He gets the biggest standing ovation ever.

The ending was sweet. Bittersweet, but sweet for all the McCandless'

The story of Chris McCandless is one worth knowing.

SpoilerA young man who was set to live a comfortable modern (by mid 90s standards) life who gave it all away to live his own version of what life should be. His great Alaskan adventure was so close to being completed. Chris teaches valuable lessons about how to live: be kind to others, appreciate nature, and importantly call your parents.

Although overall I'm not a huge fan of this book. I don't particularly like Krakauer's writing or his organization of the story.

back in 2009 I think we watched the movie in english class and I loved it so much I bought the dvd and then I wanted to read the book but it took me until 2023 to actually get the book and now I finally read it

and well it started great and I loved it and then suddenly krakauer talked about other people and while I get why (resemblance to chris and all) it bothered me and I kind of skipped those pages whoops

so the book is nice but yeah I can't really deal with the parts I didn't care about

It was really boring and half of the book was about random people instead of
Chris McCandless.
