With the super-high rating and tons of 5-star reviews, I had pretty high expectations going into this book. Were those expectations met? Eh, sort of. I wasn’t blown away like I thought I would be, but I definitely really, really liked this.
I had a few quibbles, mainly that the narrative felt a little jumpy at times. I also felt my attention wandering a bit through the middle, mostly because I thought some things were kind of predictable - for instance,. But I enjoyed everything else. The characters are great - Ruby is a strong, capable MC, and I loved Liam, Chubs, and Suzume. And the ending more than made up for the middle. There were a lot of great (and slightly heartbreaking) twists and turns in the last 100 or so pages. It definitely didn’t end quite how I thought it would, which I was very happy about.
Overall, this was a unique take on dystopian and I’m excited for the rest of the series.

Decided to read this one because my kid wants to see the movie when it comes out. This one was hard to put down. Good characters and story line.

I didn't really know what to expect. With so many dystopians out there there are quite a few that simply don't live up to the genre.
It's dark, and gloomy, and heartbreaking.
I read the book before seeing the movie... and well, the movie really ruined the book for me; it was this beautiful book and now after watching the movie... I realized that I dont really like it as much as I thought I did.

There was so much going on in this book. So many details and events preparing you for the rest of the series. This reminds me of a dystopian X-Men. I love it.

Eh. I'm kind of indifferent about this book. Yeah, I liked the concept a lot, but there were only two characters I liked and those weren't very prominent and the two main characters and the love interest were just... boring as hell. The MC also just kind of annoyed me because she was kind of whiny and uninteresting. The worldbuilding is really cool, but the rest didn't do it for me and the whole children's movement felt kind of unrealistic and typical.

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken is about a girl named Ruby who wakes up on her tenth birthday with powers she can’t control. She is sent to an interment camp and lives there for the next 6 years until she is broken out. But she doesn’t know why or by who, and when she learns who, she is just as afraid as when she was in the camp. She runs away and finds Liam, Chubs, and Zu, others who have escaped internment camps and are on the run for a supposedly safe place called ‘East River’. But Ruby has a secret, she is one of the ones with dangerous powers which makes her highest on the wanted list. I liked the story and the issues the main characters faced, as well as appreciated the depressing world they lived in (it was very nicely built), although I didn’t like the romance between the two main characters. It seemed too set up, but in the end the plot twist made it work. I would recommend this book to anyone who liked Red Queen, because it builds the same type of bleak dystopian world.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a little slow to start but it picked up quickly. I definitely look forward to reading the next two books in the series.
