I really didn't like this. if I wasn't reading it for class I would've dnf'ed it. I had two main issues with the writing 1) it read like a YA novel. After finishing the first chapter I genuinely thought it was YA until I looked it up and found it was marketed for adults. There's a lot of over explaining of symbolism, but little to no explantation of the world building. A lot happens in a short amount of pages, but very little is elaborated on. The very concept of the novella just seems like it would be better as a full length YA novel. My second issue was the overabundance of cringey millennial content that was trying to be deep. There was a lot of throw away moments where the writing was just awkward and took me out of the story (cough cough "robotown" cough cough).

I was surprised to see that this author is very critically acclaimed and has won several prestigious science fiction awards. From what I can tell a lot of the awards and praise are directed at her Binti trilogy so maybe the writing and storytelling is a lot better there, but overall I was really disappointed by this book. It just wasn't that great.

Her writing is gorgeous as always. But the point of the story was lost on me. Too much obfuscation.

I really enjoyed Nnedi Okorafor's writing, the world she created and the character of Sankofa. There wasn't much of a plot, the book was very much driven by the character and how the things that happened to her affected her and the choices she made. It felt like the opening to something bigger. I would like to read more by this author.

I liked the story and how mysterious everything was but at times the writing felt clunky and like it was explaining itself too much.
