▪ i didn't connect with this as much as the first one for some reason.
▪ my main issue is that i didn't think the Riddler was a compelling villain. sure, he did a lot of shit. he was always one step ahead of Batman. however, i just didn't buy all the things he's done as well as his reasons for doing them. he is insane, clearly, but you get what i mean right? there wasn't enough substance to what he was trying to do.
▪ there were just a lot of what the fuck moments. how the hell did Batman survive that shit??? there were a lot of instances in this that he should have been dead. yet here he is alive, not well, but alive.
▪ one thing i really liked about this volume was the flashbacks he's had with his parents. those were all good
▪ another plus is his relationship with Alfred and how it evolved overtime.
▪ Comissioner Gordon is always a favorite. but like Batman, there were a lot of times you wonder how he got away with things.

overall thoughts

i liked it, but not as much as secret city. the parts where we ses bruce's past was always good to read about, the other parts were okay i guess. they just didn't wow me.

I really enjoyed the story and artwork, appreciated the references to Batman tales in the past. Gotham seems to attract the worst things ever, so the post-apocalyptic setting in the second half of the trade doesn't seem too far fetched.

aside from some scenes with alfred, i didn't enjoy this comic at all. i thought its pacing was off, the dialogue decent at best and the story just pretty boring.

the color palette & illustration was pretty cool, i liked that style

I literally forgot this was a origin story and was genuinely worried for a bit there.

I love Alfred so much. He’s so precious. Also don’t worry, he’ll get his family eventually.

4.5 *s-- As a general rule, I don't particularly like multiple rehashings of old origin stories, as they are often redundant and boring. All the Joker stuff, for instance. This, however, is a very different Batman affair. Unlike its illustrious predecessors, this Batman origin story is flashy and flamboyant, colorful and luminous. While I won't claim that Scott Snyder is the greatest plotter in the history of comics, as far as I'm concerned, the propulsive action and dynamic page layouts (courtesy of the eminently competent Greg Capullo) more than make up for any weakness that might be found in the storytelling. I had a lot of fun-- more than I expected-- reading through this New 52 "year one" Batman arc. Enthusiastically recommended!

This was really good. I'm loving the back story for the different characters so far and the Riddler was very interesting. If you like Batman, this was a great installment for New 52.

The new 52 Batman beginnings is really good. I appreciate a new interpretation of the cast.
The Riddler is my least favorite villain and I struggled a lot through this one for that reason.
There is a good story of team work at the root. In the previous volume, Batman's "family" breaks under the joker's pressure and this volume starts out with the lone survivor. He learns to trust other people, including those who seemed to harm him in the past. Okay read.
