Prachtig maar ook pijnlijk verhaal over een leven dat getekend wordt door een verlammende angst voor een straffende god. De zachtaardige, stille Hans Sievez wordt ondanks zijn afkeer keer op keer aangetrokken tot de gebroeders van hel en verdoemenis en zijn vrouw en zoons kunnen alleen maar toezien hoe hij zichzelf daarin verliest.
Het creatieve, speelse, vrije kind dat we in het begin zien, versterkt alleen maar het verlies dat deze man door zijn geloof lijdt. Hartverscheurend.

The title is beyond beautiful and might have been the reason why I decided to read this book. Certain parts of this book are so vivid with imagery which easily panted the images in my mind. I couldn't stand the main character. I believe his wife and kids deserved better, especially his youngest son. I didn't enjoy the bible parts one bit. Once or twice would've been fine, but it went back to it constantly.

This was not an easy book to read. In many ways, it is a tragedy, with the protagonist being caught in an increasing web of an extremely miserable and extreme form of Calvinism (Protestant Christianity) as well as being at the mercy of both his own character flaws and economic circumstance. It is not a book to be read for light-hearted amusement. And yet, it was well worthwhile. The man's miserable church is in Ede, the next town to where I live and where I used to live. I've met a lot of people left with a trauma from churches like that, and now I understand them better. But it is not the case that this book only has something to say to people from this region. The protagonist's problems all come back to the fact that his father could not form a good relationship with him, leaving him with a whole life of trying to fill that gap and in turn, he also fails to love one of his sons. Universal themes that come back in all cultures. It was not easy reading, but certainly worthwhile.

Rauwe, kale reformatorische worstelingen, geschreven in de tale Kanaans. Ik had enorme mepneigingen door de huichelachtigheid, de geniepigheid van Hans, de hoofdpersoon.

Een erg mooi geschreven, maar ook erg droevig boek. Hoe uit zo'n lief, aandoenlijk jongetje zo'n godsdienstwaanzinnige kan groeien, wordt heel aannemelijk en meeslepend uit de doeken gedaan.

Dit verhaal heeft een diepe indruk gemaakt. Ik denk dat dit boek een kijkje geeft in een innerlijke religieuze strijd die de meesten vreemd is. Het verhaal was beklemmend, ik heb me verschrikkelijk geïrriteerd aan de calvinistische personages en hun manipulatie. Ik herkende sommige woorden en sommige gebruiken en gedachtegangen uit mijn eigen jeugd in een evangelisch christelijke omgeving. Ik schrok dat ik dergelijke opvattingen deel(de) met die zwarte stroming van christenen. Een goed boek voor mij om kritisch te kijken naar het leven, het christelijke geloof (of een stroming daarvan), de schade die het aanricht en waar de waarheid dan wel te vinden is.
