It has been some time between finishing City of Brass (which I adored) and starting Kingdom of Copper. I found it very helpful to refresh my memory of the characters and events of the first book with the Wikipedia summary because Chakraborty starts off right in the middle of things. Like many fantasy books, there is a lot going on and a lot of non-described features (creatures, attire, etc). It was useful to look things up as they were mentioned to really get connected to the world/events being described. This is well-paced and engrossing. I still think I love the first book more, but this one was pretty dang good.

What can I say? This book series is the most enthralling YA fantasy trilogy I have read in years. As a seasoned reader of this genre the books are a refreshing change from the same plots being doled out onto us by every author.

The plot built from Arab / Eastern lore and characters written to be flawed as well as morally grey but with enough humanity in them to make you root for them as well as hate them.

The political commentary adding to the mix. An age appropriate version of the game of thrones.

And lastly the fact that each character has their own arc. Their own passions, drive, motivations and what makes them tick. Someone is a healer, someone a warrior someone an artist an engineer a writer a scientist. It’s rare to see YA authors writing books about fictional lands and kings and princes give their characters actual personality— everyone is just a rebel warrior assassin thief or noble. The Daevabadis are much more!

Cannot wait to read the conclusion to this series.

Plot moves along nicely and the series has good character growth. I find that the team I was rooting for in the first book isn't who I was rooting for now. I love Dara's point of view and I love Ali's point of view. I really like how Nahri and Ali don't just accept what they are given. They actively work to get what they want and don't know when to give up. I love that in my heroines!
