I liked the first book better, but this definitely left me with questions for book 3. So it was very much a middle book in a trilogy - not as good as the first and a lot of set up for the final.
Some language.

QUOTES:
"I do not know, Alizayd. I am near equally torn between declaring you my emir and having you executed."
"I know not how to get you to bend, Alizayd. I have threatened you, I have killed your shafit allies, banished your mother, sent you to be hunted by assassins... and still you defy me. I am hoping your heart proves weaker than your sense of righteousness... or perhaps wiser."
"My dear Banu Nahida..."
"You could do what?" he asked politely, his eyes dancing. (I LOVE JAMSHID)
"No, child, I don't think you're wrong." Nisreen touched Nahri's hand. "I think you're brilliant and courageous and your heart is in the right place. If I hold my tongue, it's because you share your mother's stubborn streak and I would rather serve quietly at your side than lose you altogether."
"I'm proud of you, Nahri. Perhaps in all our disagreements, that's not a thing I've made clear, but I am. You're a good Banu Nahida. A good... what is your human word? Doctor?" She smiled. "I think your ancestors would be proud too. A little horrified... but proud." Nahri blinked, her eyes suddenly damp. "I think that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me."
"But I'm glad you found me. I was actually hoping to... " His gray eyes went wide, tracing over her. "Oh," he whispered. "You... you look–" He abruptly shut his mouth, averting his gaze.
"Yes. The only time you're not wearing something stark and streaked with dirt, it's because someone else has dressed you." Embarrassment colored his face again, and she laughed. "It's a compliment, Ali. You look nice."
"You look incredible." The words seemed to slip unthinkingly from his mouth, and when she met his gaze, a little startled by the emotion in his voice, he looked away. "Your garments, I mean," he explained quickly. "The headdress. It's very... intricate."
"But I don't understand why you wouldn't want to go back. You clearly loved it there. Your letters were always— " Ali started.
"You read my letters?" Nahri knew she couldn't hide her slip. She let out a huff of frustration at both herself and him.
"I... All right, I read them. They were interesting."
She reached out, taking his chin in one hand and forcing him to look back at her. He visibly jumped at her touch, his eyes going wide.
She cupped his cheek, her thumb brushing his beard. She didn't miss the sudden racing of his heart. Nor the sadness rising in her own.
He closed his eyes. God forgive him, she had looked so beautiful last night.
Ali pulled her into his arms. She started to cry harder and they sank slowly to the floor.
"Your Jamshid."
Jamshid was family.
"Where is my brother?"
"Let's go die."
Ali took a deep breath but then clasped her hand and climbed to his feet. "Until the end."

"I've had enough of men hurting me because they were upset."
I will end up dropping some quotes in between some of my thoughts but damn, I still don't entirely understand how I feel about this book. I don't mean anything bad by it but how am I supposed to sort out the mess that my mind is right now? It's been probably around 20-30 minutes since I finished the book and I am still not okay. I keep thinking about those last 20% that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
CAN WE TALK ABOUT THESE FEW QUOTES?
"In three days, you will once again have the blood of thousands on your hands."
"Back then, he'd had quieter dreams for himself as well. Fleeting fantasies of reclaiming his family's house, taking a wife and raising children of his own."
"I am the weapon the Nahids made me. Nothing more, nothing less, and apparently for all of eternity."
My heart keeps breaking for Dara because he is broken man, who deserves some freaking happiness and chill for once in centuries. I love his character and the turmoil he has in his povs, when he knows what he would be doing is wrong but serving Nahids had never lead him to a better path and even now it hadn't. Am I too naive to ask for Dara to be at peace in Empire of Gold? Probably very naive.
I love Nahri with all my heart. Poor girl can't have a break either. Someone fucks up and she suffers or gets involved or just her being Banu Nahida gets her in problems.
Ali and Muntadhir better have a big bro hug whenever they meet again in Empire of Gold because I can't have him thinking the worst. But their fights/arguments or just their stupidity in this book killed me. A lot of times I wanted Ali to punch Muntadhir because he was being plain mean/rude towards him because all Ali tried to do was what he thought was right. It just was so petty, their whole feud.
JAMSHID is all I will say because I love him to death.
I don't know what else to say because I am not okay. I do wanna talk about certain characters but I won't be able to remember how to type their name out and I'm lazy to get the book now. Which is a bad excuse.

It’s not often that I find the second book in a trilogy better than the first, but that is the case for The Kingdom of Copper. While I felt the first book in the series was slow and didn’t have much happening, this book was like a tinderbox waiting to explode. Lots of political intrigue. It’s hard to decide whose side you are on as each Main character POV aligns differently on the issue in the world of Daevabad. Great read. Interested to see how the trilogy ends.
