It was very interesting to compare the book to the play at first, but the second half of the book really dragged on.

SpoilerThis is such a great book, I enjoyed this book a lot. I sometimes struggle with reading classics but this book ha smanaged to be such a page turner for me! I find Raoul so annoying but Erik is definitely such an intriguing character. I am dissapointed so many people think christine was just a damsel in distress when she literally was very headstrong especially when telling Raoul she can love whomever she wants, it is actually pretty understandable why she is terrified with Erik, he's so much older than her and much more terrifying. I also like the Persian, wish we could see more of him. Overall I enjoy the plot and the section with the directors, it added some slight humor.

A word of warning to future readers: the quality of this story in English is unfortunately very dependent on which translation you have. In the most widespread translation (the only one that is public domain), the writing is dry and highly abridged to the point of having entire paragraphs missing. The best translation you can get is the Penguin Classics edition, translated by Mireille Ribière.

I don't think I've read anything this barking mad since Hugo's [b:Notre-Dame de Paris|30600|Notre-Dame de Paris|Victor Hugo|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1421537683l/30600._SY75_.jpg|3043569] - all that is missing is a psychedelic van full of meddling kids and a talking dog to solve what the patently half-witted characters can't see right under their noses. Disturbingly gullible cast aside, the real star of the show is the Opera House itself, a wonderfully labyrinthine gothic pile with a capacious and clearly seriously underused 'cellar', apparently capable of housing subterranean rivers, dwellings, and elaborate enclosed landscapes. They don't write them like this any more, or at least no sane publisher would print them if they did.

I really enjoyed this! So atmospheric and thrilling - I couldn’t put it down at times. I did, however, find the last 50 pages just utterly nonsense — so ridiculous that it took the story from enchanting to silly. Such a good read though!
