This was such an interesting reread. I liked the book the first time I read it, but it really bloomed upon reread for me. This time I definitely had a much more critical eye for Yozo’s feelings and thoughts about himself and the world around him, and I was surprised by how personal this felt to me. It’s such an interesting look into how depression and self-hate can color everything around you and lead to self-destructive behaviors.

A brutal, heart aching story of a youngster named Yozo. Living with continuous despair of human beings and with a thought process of complete dejection, Yozo laments about his life in the three notebooks.

The book basically is very sad and depressing and did entirely show a soul growing up with depression his whole life. I did feel there were ways out but then it is what he did choose to take upon himself. A wave of emotions hit and keeps you wondering why this just happens. In the end he concludes that "Everything passes". Well it does.

Overall I enjoyed this book, it really explores society and how we function within it. It’s a book I want to eventually read physically and dissect properly.

Okay I genuinely could not understand this book. It was not awful, but I think I completely missed the point. It was sad, unfortunate, but I just couldn't really fully understand the purpose and what was going on :(
