Having heard about this series for years from a good friend who really enjoys it, I was pumped to read this book.
Unfortunately, while I really do enjoy the world of the Nightside, the writing is so poor and the plot so ridden with cliche that I can't bring myself to read book 2 or recommend this book to anyone, unless they have low standards and are looking for some good mindless fantasy entertainment verging at times on horror.
So much potential, utterly ham strung by poor execution. I may give book 2 a try someday, but it won't be soon and my expectations won't be high.

This is fast-paced story that I read in one sitting - fast paced and full of action - my biggest complaint is the everything is explained and then when someone says, "why?" well, it is "the Nightside" - really? - everything is "The Nightside" - why does this happen - because we are in "The Nightside" - well, it is established that we traveled to the Nightside and everything but that cant be the reason for everything too - it is kind of weak to me personally - but again, the story is good and has enough action to keep this a page turner - I would say yes to this for a paranormal urban adventure novel.

Read this ages ago and recently listened to it on audio. (The audio is quite nice, but good luck finding it anywhere other than Audible). Paranormal noir in a grotesque, uncanny city under London.
Some of the writing can be a bit repetitive/info dumpy, but the plot and the bizarre characters make up for it.

The writing in this book is simple, but the ideas are glorious. Full of myths and legends that we have forgotten. Green brings us back to those times when we believed in all the nasty things that go bump in the night, but that age and culture have us no longer believing. Yet we do want to believe and Green does that. [return][return]The main character is straight out of noir. Yet the location, the nightside is nothing but ordinary. green takes us to a place that we all wish we could go see, but that we might be too afraid to go to if it actually real. [return][return]As I said before the writing is simple, and for some this would turn people off, but for me the imagination, and places that Green takes me makes up for it. I was reminded of many a dream, of many days spent reading tales of myths and he makes them all real again.

It was okay. The writing was awkward, "obvious," in places, for lack of a better description. It was kind of like Roger Rabbit meets freaky-paranormal world. It's clear the author has a whole lot of backstory in his head for his world and all of it's characters, it just comes out rather forced at times. It's interesting enough that I'll read the second book, though.

I bought this book in a yard sale years ago. It's an interesting read, but it's nothing to tell your gran about. If you want a light (230 pages?) urban-fantasy story that isn't all too complicated to whittle the time away, then go for it.
I don't think I'll be picking up the next installment of this series. It's trying too hard to be something it's not.

DNF at about 75 pages. A bad copy of Neverwhere. It had potential, just not for me.

Well written but for whatever reason, it just didn’t grab me. It may have been the narration, which didn’t jive with the author’s description of Taylor. If I try future volumes, I won’t go the audiobook route. I wouldn’t discourage urban fantasy fans from trying this series—this audiobook simply wasn’t my cup of tea.

Somehow tries too hard and doesn’t try hard enough.
