Old english and lifeless storylines make The Tempest boring and hard to read. If this was not for an English assignment I would have never read or even looked into the Tempest

Reading a play when you've seen it is interesting but what makes these kinds of books, like this one from the Royal Shakespeare Company, even more interesting is all the additional commentary and explanations.

I don't know how to rate or even to review this.
All I'll say is that I read it and I'm still none the wiser of wtf anything of this means.

Me: So WTF is happening here? Who are the bad guys? Is Caliban actually a bad person?

Prospero: I want REVENGEEEEE I am a MAGICIAAAAAN hahahahahah!
Miranda: Oh I have seen this guy at the beach I'm in love now.
Sebastian: Oh I'm washed ashore on this island and I just saw my father drown, but this girl is real hot so I'm in love now.
Caliban: Okay so maybe it was wrong to lay my hand on this girl years ago but this dude who killed my Mum is keeping me as a slave I just want to be left alone.
Me: Well this is some colonizer bullshit
Ariel: This dude promised me my freedom and now he is blackmailing me - again.
Me: Well this is some sexist bullshit

Mirand: No really I'm in love
PRospero: YOU! Are! A Slut! I will give you away to this stupid specimen of a boy, but let me tell him beforehand what a slut you are!
Me: Well THIS is some sexist bullshit

I saw this performed by Shakespeare in the Park years ago and read SparkNotes before diving into my own read of the text today. It was fun to catch some famous lines in the context of this story, and it was an overall simple one, but with just enough characters with names that I had to keep referring to a character list to keep everyone straight. Not my fav Shakespeare, but I did like it!
