It started me off a mess of tears and emotions. I finally found my people, the ones that understand the struggles of a child that has so much to offer but no way to control it. Along the way I learned things about my son, my husband, and even myself. I learned that my family is full of spirit, just displayed in different ways. This should be a required read for parents, teachers, pediatricians, and all people that work with kids. I definitely plan to reread this book throughout my spirited child’s life and pass it on when he has children of his own.

I found this book worthwhile, even though I don't know that my kids are "spirited". The author's breakdown of "spirit" traits - intensity, sensitivity, etc. - and how they affect children's ability to to function was useful, as was her step-by-step breakdown of how to address difficult situations (essentially: anticipate issues, set realistic goals, make a plan, appreciate small successes). However, much of the space was taken up by anecdotes (which were occasionally interesting, but not very useful unless one's child has the same issue) and most of the concrete strategies were obvious or familiar from other parenting books.

This book is validating for those of us with a spirited kid. It’s not our fault. As the author says, we have to work harder as parents but it’s so worth it. Now if everyone could read this to gain more empathy and understanding, that’d be great.

Persistence, Intensity, Sensitivity, persistence. The author describes a half dozen traits and how to parent. Not very helpful at this stage, maybe at a later time.

this book was a godsend when I was a very young mom raising three children all born 14 months apart. It was particularly useful in helping me with my youngest.
