Beautifully written and rich in culture - I adored this urban sci-fi/fantasy book.

Perfect for those who love stories featuring 'mutants', compelling story lines with twists and turns, as well as fantastic friendship bonds.

4.5* X-Men meets Amari and the Night Brothers in the first book in what is set to be a game-changing new middle grade series. Okyeka and the Academy of the Sun is both an action packed superhero story and an empowering celebration of Black hair and it's fabulous.

With exciting twists, kickass action sequences, heartwarming friendships and loveable characters, I'm devastated that I don't already have book two in my hands. This was truly fantastic and a wonderful and necessary addition to the middle grade sci-fi/fantasy genre.

Strong female heroine that is Black, Nigerian, and has amazing hair that she struggles with but through which her greatest strengths flow. A wonderful story. It ends on more than a bit of a cliffhanger; looking forward to book 2 in the series.

Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun is a short middle-grade fantasy about a young girl who discovers she is Solari - a group of Nigerian superheroes with magical powers.

I liked Onyeka’s personality a lot, and also appreciated Cheyenne and Adanna. I loved the representation of chronic illness/medical conditions, with Cheyenne having Turner’s Syndrome and another character having Synesthesia. The writing was well-paced, and I liked the Nigerian culture infused in the story.

Unfortunately, though, I found it a little boring, hence the rating. That being said, though, it may just not be the book for me — there’s nothing wrong with it, and I’m disappointed I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I still recommend it to young readers, fantasy-lovers, or anyone who wants a story with Nigerian main characters!
