Carlos Ruiz Zafón is one of the most poetic writers I've ever read a book from. I adore the way he is able to create an atmosphere in his books. This book was not as good as the first book, but still highly enjoyable. The first book just has a very special place in my heart and I'm sure that book will always be one of my favorites. It's hard to top that!

The book seems a bit long for the story that is told, but it's filled with amazing characters, a great atmosphere and a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The way Carlos Ruiz Zafón wrote this book; you will get the feeling that you're right there with David Martín.

Devil's Advocate type book using an author instead of a lawyer. Love the prose of the writing but he kinda lost me toward the end. I wasn't as excited about picking up the book to finish it. I am, however, going to read his other books. Maybe I would have liked it more if I had read "The Shadow of the Wind" first?

I really liked this author's previous book The Shadow of the Wind. But this one felt more disjointed. It has been translated from the original Spanish version and I kept feeling that perhaps crucial things were left out. I was kept out of being fully involved in the story by being a touch confused. I did like it, but not as mush as I like his previous novel.

I liked "The Shadow of the Wind" so much that I just had to read another story in it's universe.
This time, we are taken to the 20's in Barcelona, long before the events of the first book.
Once more, the characters were captivating and the descriptions and dialogues on point. For me, the story line wasn't as interesting as the first one, but was still intriguing.
My favorite parts were the crossovers with the "The Shadow of the Wind" references, and I absolutely loved Isabella, my favorite woman written by Zafón so far.
Will definitely read the next one as well.

It was much more of a complicated thriller than I thought, so it was scary to me.
