This is my second time reading it, and while it doesn’t have the same impact knowing what’s going to happen, I remember how I felt the first time. It’s a beautifully heartbreaking and emotional story. I feel so connected with and empathetic towards the two main characters, Miriam and Laila. The writing is perfect for this subject matter and had such an emotional impact for me. I love this book, this story, and these characters. It’s heartbreaking to know this is the reality for many women in our world today.

Woof, this is not for the faint of heart. But an absolutely necessary novel, rightfully considered a future classic.
This book follows two women, from different generations, different upbringings, and very different ideas of what life, love and marriage are supposed to look like. As their worlds inevitably, and tragically collide, we endure unspeakable violence, fear and wartime conditions through their eyes and experiences. The way they go from strangers, to partners during a time when women are stripped of their autonomy and personhood, of their basic human rights, highlights the strength it takes to be a woman, and to endure all these unspeakable things for themselves and for their families in order to keep them safe/alive.
Utterly heartbreaking, hard to digest and infuriating all on the same page, this author weaves a tragic story with a sliver of hope at the end. This will certainly be one I am unlikely to forget anytime soon.

I think this is the best book I’ve ever read. The author has the wonderful ability to evoke emotions, to portray the most cruel and unspeakable events and make you feel hopeful still, hopeful that everything will turn out okay.

This one was every bit as good as The Kite Runner.

A beautifully written story that I could not put down. Its a tale about sisterhood, especially in the face of extreme female oppression. The story also weaves in a bit of Afghan history. I've known about the Taliban through only news reports, but reading about how the rich culture and history has been destroyed by religious extremists and years of colonialism was eye opening.
Despite the dark topics, the ending is hopeful and shows the resilience of Afghans.

This novel is not for the faint of heart.  It is painful and tragic.  There is repeatedly domestic violence, which is very intense and vivid.  There is general misogyny, hatred of women if they are unable to conceive, or if they give birth to girls.  There is graphic, war-related violence.  And that does not cover all the potential triggers that occur in the book.  Good writing, well-crafted story, important historical depiction, but it is not an easy read for the sensitive.

i had to leave the room i was in to cry while reading this. idk if this is controversial but in some ways i preferred this over the kite runner. i think there are problematic elements in the book but it still has a captivating prose and poetic flow that is easy to get lost in
