"We speak on the phone, we sometimes meet up. Every now and then she tries to have me killed." He shifted a buttock. "I can't remember if I've ever been married, but it sounds like that's what it's like."
Funny spy novel. Gonna read every word this author has ever written.

3.5, rounded down. A lot of this was great -- the character work, the set pieces, the beginning that sucks you in -- but any time the plot is , I check out.

I think this one is the best in the series so far. I've had some mixed feelings in the past, but this time I really enjoyed all of the storylines, I could see the point of Lamb, there were some good shocks, and the whole book felt tightly plotted, with the characters all really secure in who they are.
Looking forward to the next one...

Spook Street is the fourth in Herron’s ongoing Slough House series, detailing the activities of a group of rejects, burnouts and losers who have washed out of the British Secret Service.
It’s also probably the best so far - Herron is on cracking form here with the main plot here (ostensibly the usual “catch the terrorists” fodder) interweaved with one of the main characters dealing with his grandfather (and in practice surrogate father)’s descent into dementia. Herron picks up lines that have been left in the water from previous books and combines the whole into something really rather masterful.
