This was a really cute, quick read. I’d recommend it to anyone who finished the trilogy but is left wanting more from it. It was cool to get a closer look into the Darre society, and super interesting to read about a gender-bent version of our patriarchy.

I loved the Inheritance Trilogy that this novella follows, but I absolutely adore this one. I can not recommend this enough.

I imagine it could be read alone but there is so much more depth and meaning having read the other books first. It's so much easier to love the characters.

All of the books in this trilogy have modern parallels with regard to power, love, race, and warrior resistance.

But those modern parallels were so striking in this book. I want to quote several passages from the end but pulling them out of the story feels disrespectful to NK Jemisin and the way she crafted them into the whole (besides being a spoiler).

But I keep quoting the passages mentally. They are haunting and inspirational and moving.

Read this book. If possible, read the trilogy first. It's well worth the time it takes.

This was a nice novella that beautifully complements the three main books in The Inheritance Trilogy. I really liked following Shill as she discovered what it means to be a godling in the human realm.

N. K. Jemisin really has a talent for writing distinct voices - you could clearly follow Shill's growth from the change in the narration of the first chapters (as a new-born, which got a bit cringy at times) to the last chapters (where the character is much more mature).

The tone is generally upbeat and funny, but there are still interesting topics addressed, like self-discovery and male-female stereotypes. The climax of the novella adds a new layer to the end of the trilogy that brings so much joy!

A really sweet novella set in the same universe as The Inheritance Trilogy although an independent story. Good for those who want a bit more of that world and don’t mind silliness.

"A woman's strength has always lain in not giving up."

Such a cute story! It has a lovable narrator and great social criticismㅡtwo things that made me love The Inheritance Trilogy in the first place. The theme about empowerment was well executed and it was a delightful read, especially since I just finished reading The Kingdom of Gods. I'm so glad I could go back to the Inheritance world through this short but sweet novella!
