Solid dark romance book. Would read the rest of the series.

Read the first couple of chapters at Barnes and Noble and was hooked to our tall dark and broody MMC lol. It had the makings of a good horror story (complete with a silly horror movie female heroine running into danger) with a nice blend of smut along with plot. Yes, the FMC and MMC have their little "games" but it didn't feel forced. Their feelings for each other seemed to develop naturally over the course of the book.

A good choice for someone looking for some dark paranormal romance.

Beware all the trigger warnings though. This was no vanilla smut.

Spice scale (as defined by Mysterious Galaxy):

FORCED myself through this. What should have been a weekend read took nearly two weeks! Read on recommendation.

Rae: Gradually became a depthless, shallow character as she repeatedly and numerously ran down the path least travelled directly into danger over and over again until she was little more than dumb bitch with a pain fetish.

Leon: Held the damn relationship development together with quick witt and banter, right up until he turned on a penny and started referring to Rae as “Babygirl” ad nauseam. And it was indeed nauseating.

It read like an episode of Sabrina with the Eldrich Terrors and BS Girl bossing.
Justice was served by side characters. The most relevant death went wholly unexplained. And the entire 300 odd pages felt like an excuse to just stereotype Leon into this demon BDSM Sub/Dom pigeonhole that totally retracted the plots impact for me.
Went into this expecting “Good girls” and instead got “Slap me til I climax” again, ad nauseam. Not my cup of kink. Completely skipped the spice scenes later in the book.
Will not be picking up the sequels.

I’m not into the masochistic sex stuff. So some of that I had to skim.

Also, I hate when men call women “baby girl”, especially in a sexual context. The author started using this term 75% of the way into the book and then used it constantly for the rest of the book and it was so off putting that it cost this a whole Star.

Nonetheless, I found the story compelling and was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this book. The writing (with a few exceptions) was solid and the spice was top notch ( and would probably be even more so for those S&M lovers).
