reread sept. 2008 in anticipation of Steppenwolf's production. I don't really know how they're going to make a show out of this book. And even though this is my second reading of it, I'm not sure I understand it yet.

I loved this book. I still don't quite "get" it but his writing style is completely different than what I'm used to and really sucks you in. I will be reading more from this author.

Literally would give this 1/2 star if I could. I did not enjoy this and made it 30% of the way through (to the cat slaughtering) before I decided it was not worth continuing since I just straight up was not enjoying it. The only part I did like was Nakata talking to the cats……that was before the slaughtering.

This story is something like a metaphor. There's a young man running from his fate and tormented by his past, and an old man living in the present and has no memory of the past, who is looking for something but he has no clue what. The two characters are somehow living parallel to one another but never meet. Murakami blurs historical periods, cultural traditions, music, fashion, food, and ghost stories in this novel as the two characters go through a series of surrealist adventures.

I highly recommend playing the songs that he mentions while reading this book. I always do this while reading Murakami and it really immerses you into the world. Describing what this book is about complicates things, but the book leaves us with no easy answers. I was left in awe at the acceptance of the shared confusion that both the reader (myself) and the characters experience.

It was slow to start for me, but once I was hooked, I was hooked. Such a bizarre, beautiful story that came together very well.

The story is okay. Mind-bending but I liked it.

The writing is atrocious. Not even close to matching the hype. The Emperor's new clothes, perhaps?
So many pointless descriptions. So many scenes that go nowhere. So many pointless philosophizations. And I didn't need Nakata to point out, "Nakata isn't very bright" in every other sentence he spoke. The point kind of sinks in after the first few hundred times he points it out.
