This book jumps between a lot of different perspectives and because of that, some parts of it are much stronger than others. My personal favorite was the Marx highlight.
Spoiler “you will miss the horses” was my favorite line in the entire book
I also just love the focus on the nitty gritty aspects of friendship. The way it’s written here is almost overwhelming because it spans years and it’s just so dang realistic. The petty grievances, the misplaced blame, the hurt, the love, the taking care of each other, the hurting each other, the falling apart and falling back together, the doubts, the expectations, the genius, the melding of souls. I like how there’s a pull to Sadie and Sam’s relationship, like it’s irresistible. Sometimes that pull is reserved for romantic relationships, but you see it in all types of relationships in this book. I also liked the way that memory is a slippery thing in this book. In books that span years but can be read in hours, sometimes we expect the characters to have the same picture perfect memory of happenings in the book as we do, even though it’s unrealistic. That’s not the case here. It’s a very thought-provoking book, but the thing that made me love it the most is that it made me want to create. Sam and Sadie pour so much of themselves into their games and the result always means something. I crave that feeling.

I have avoided writing the review for this for a while, simply because I refuse to believe that elements of this book happened. I really liked some elements of this book, its unapologetic Jewishness, its strong-minded characters, the way the gaming world is explored, amongst other things. But wow, I lost a lot of interest after the thing happens.

To reel off some more positives, one thing I loved was how Zevin takes the reader through the gaming world. I am not a massive gamer and do not know a lot of the technical jargon of the gaming world, but Zevin wrote this in a way that was easy to understand, but it generally had an immersive style to it. I felt it was easy to get sucked into Sam and Sadie's world and I liked this element of it. Despite their flaws, I also somewhat enjoyed seeing a variety of characters. This novel is basically a whole platonic miscommunication trope, but I liked seeing different sides to the characters and significant contrasts between their personalities. Finally, the disability rep in this is good and I appreciated the way Zevin depicted Sam's physical disability.

I felt like the thing that happens was just completely unnecessary though.
Spoiler Killing Marx was just an absolute shock but I felt like the story was not destined for that to happen. I think up until that point, I was waiting for more complex elements to Sam and Sadie's lives, but that felt too abrupt and unnatural and I felt the way life was dealt with after Marx's death was not told well, nor was it realistic in places? I don't know? It felt like lazy writing to be honest. I didn't appreciate it at all.

I don't know if I would re-read this, and I am unsure if I would recommend this. Certainly check the trigger warnings before you read and I think whilst it appears pacey in parts and lighter on the surface, it can get very dark very quickly and I would say the latter half of the book goes down-hill.

This book was pretty dry to me and I didn’t enjoy it much. Once I realized that Marx dies I didn’t feel like it was worth spending another hour and a half on a book I didn’t enjoy. I hate not finishing books but this just wasn’t worth it. I really don’t understand the hype, maybe someday I’ll come back to finish but it’s doubtful. I didn’t really like any of the characters and it was depressing asf with no reason to make it worthwhile. The premise of the video game creation was the only interesting part to me.
Sadie and her professor’s relationship felt super unnecessary and toxic to me. Although I can understand that it may be difficult to leave a abusive or imbalanced power relationship, I could not stand it. I could not stand Sam for his misogyny and lack of respect for Sadie. The only slightly redeeming character was Marx and of course he died. I honestly don’t understand why this book is so popular, it felt like I was punishing myself each time I opened the book to read it.

The way this book is written is stunning to say the least. I had a difficult time with some of the characters and their choices but I think that’s purposeful and real. This is a book I’ll be thinking about for a long time both for it’s artistry, character study, and it’s themes. Warning (not spoiler): this is a book that makes you self reflect a lot on your own relationships and choices.

The characters are devastatingly real and flawed. They’re not always likeable and that’s precisely why I kept reading. They felt real and I needed to see how these very real people handled trauma, love, work and friendship throughout their lives. It is extremely relatable.

Loved seeing the diverse representation- biracial, disable, asexual characters. It felt like real life.

There are some serious trigger warnings so just be aware!

Overall, I don’t think I can read this again for along time but it will definitely haunt me forever. Great book.

Loved the world of building video games- was very accessible for non-gamers.
