Brilliant last four pages. But a souless book on the whole. It felt like the main character was made female to make things more interesting.

This was an incredibly frustrating read for me. It felt like he had a jigsaw puzzle representing a story he wanted to tell, but lit 80% of the pieces on fire and then mashed the remaining 20% together into an overwritten, unnecessarily ambiguous, painfully winding tale that went nowhere. Literally huge sections of the book (the entire sea expedition, every scene of her family history, the section from her sister's point of view, etc) seemed like things that were thrown in to try to hit a minimum word count. No good explanations are given for anything from minor story elements to critical plot points; things just happen one after another and then everyone moves on suddenly. Everyone acts like they just learned how to do their job the day before. People vanish with no explanation; random things happen because of magic. Pages and pages are given over to describing, re-describing, and then re-describing again things that have no bearing on the story (at one point something like 4-6 pages are given over to just listing off every single thing in the Voyager 1 probe).
I honestly don't see what so many people were raving about this one for; I'll admit that sometimes the author's writing was compelling but I could not get past the point that nearly the entire time he was writing about....nothing. Would not recommend

I really enjoyed the book apart from the ending, I hated it so much it negates everything else I liked about the book.
The number 2 thing I hate about a story is a paradox, and this one like all paradoxes make no frixking sense. I'm so mad writ8ng this review at 23h on a Thursday night.
