surprisingly idiosyncratic for something so universally accepted as great. i'm grateful for this existing in a public way. going to be turning over Coates' formulation "people who are convinced they are white" for the rest of my life. really appreciate the quick left turn toward climate at the end as well. there are good books 5 times as long that don't say half as much, even if the prose very intermittently smells a little bit of ham. sorry but you are legally required to read this.

Read this for an anti-racism book club, and there exists a raw honesty and insight here. Full reflection here: https://www.christinaji.com/all-posts/blog-post-title-one-sz6e5

Still processing this one, but so much needed perspective. Just about anyone would benefit from reading this... especially those who think they are white.

Coates pulled me straight into his world from the start. A world I am not accustomed to. A world I have not lived. His writing is meticulously and beautiful. I will study this book endlessly.

Thinking a lot about how different the person I am now is from the person who first read this book years ago.
