This is probably almost a 4.5, but had to round down. The novel is split between Death and a few other Wizards. The Death sections are some of Pratchett's most profound and even moving writing. Death as a character doesn't get much development in Mort, but here, he goes on one hell of a journey.

The Wizard stuff was mixed and a bit convoluted in the final third. Large parts of their section could have been removed.

I had high hopes for this book. I so wanted to enjoy it, but didn't. There were quite a few very amusing moments. But I felt like there was no flow. The bits about Death/Bill Door and everything else all felt like 2 different books mashed up together. Unfortunately I find Terry Pratchett's books are very hit or miss (usually the latter) with me.

Death is my favorite character in the Discworld series, with second-favorite being tied between Susan Bones and The Librarian. Upon a second reading, I feel confident in saying that this is my favorite book of the series (keeping in mind I've read about half the series so far.) The Windle Poons plotline is great comic relief, but the heart (and what speaks to me) is in Death's experience in the world. Truly moving.

Pratchett's humor, humanity, wit and wisdom are present in abundance in this novel.
