Burying Eva Flores by Jennifer Alsever is a young adult mystery novel with a supernatural twist. A little bit Mean Girls and a little bit Death Note, it is an okay read. All of the characters are either annoying or just downright unlikeable. It is hard to root for a self-described underdog like Sophia. There is a huge theme of “absolute power corrupts absolutely” with her, but she wasn't that great of a person in the first place. The supernatural aspect of the story is barely there and only comes into play when a need for an explanation of something arises. There are a few plot holes that left me thinking “Wait a minute, I think I missed something”. After reading two chapters, I wrote down my predictions for the end of this book. I was right. I was also very much not a fan of the adult-teen flirtation that happens.

Overall, the character development is lacking, and the plot is predictable. However, the writing style is engaging and keeps the reader interested until the end.

*I received an e-ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.*

The narrative takes place in the village of Paonia and centers on a group of teenagers. There is a legend that the town is cursed by the indigenous people who were forced from their lands. TikTok celebrity Eva has a sizable fan base that looks forward to her videos. After her abrupt disappearance, it seems as though she might not be alive as the days go by. Sophia is suspected because of their tense relationship. Although he believes she was evasive when questioned, the sheriff understands he needs to locate the corpse in order to prove her guilt.

This novel is a winner because of the people, setting, tension, and connections. Jennifer Alsever is a Young Adult novel author that truly immerses the reader in the narrative. Her characters are easy to come to know, and the plot is captivating enough to have you turning pages and turning pages.

I believe that this was supposed to be thriller vibes but I didn't feel it here rather felt like it was some kind of a gossipy vibe novel?

I was excited to start this because of the synopsis but I would say that it did not give me what I hoped.

I didn't have a problem with the writing in general, mostly the pacing and how it was utilized. Those aspects would be the overall execution of the plot, the consistency and of course the overall performance of the story.

The first few chapters of the novel was interesting, it was pretty gripping for me, however, the start of the 45% and some of the 55% up to the end was frustrating and at the same time parts where I still don't know how to feel yet.

It also felt so long most of the times with the alternating povs, it would have been better if it just focused on Sophia to make it more suspenseful.

As for the characters. Definitely hated a bunch of characters SPECIFICALLY RILEY AND EVA. LET'S NOT FORGET THAT STEP-FATHER AND SUB-PLOT AROUND IT, I HATED IT.

Final Verdict. 50/50. Could have been better.

Audiobook Arc provided in exchange for an honest review - thank you!

I really enjoyed this audiobook.
It is multi POV, with plenty of different voices for the characters. It was fun and interesting and had lots of twists and turns, with a dash of magic. I absolutely burned through this to see what happened at the end! I think I would have equally enjoyed reading the book, but the audiobook was excellent.

Recap:
Eva Flores is TIKTOK's latest sensation. She posts, and she gets millions of likes, thousands of dollars, and message after message from adoring fans. She is also the bane of Sophia Palmer's existence. When Sophia refused to bow down before the queen bee and do everything required of her to earn Eva's friendship, Eva eviscerated her on social media. She called her a stalker, she copied her hairdo, and she got her fired from her job. When Sophia is gifted a leather journal she thinks nothing of the story she writes about Eva's fall from grace... until she starts to see unlikely and eery parallels between the words she's written and events happening around her in real life. No one could blame her for taking back a little of the power that Eva stole from her. But how far is too far when someone's real life hangs in the balance?

Reaction:
The genre of paranormal thriller is one that I'm still learning to love, but I have to say Jennifer Alsever hit it out of the park with this one. From the text messages, emails, and interviews that were entered in as part of the text, to the multiple points of view that we read in real time as the story unfolded, to the elements of the mystical and fantastic that made this story as spooky as it did thrilling. Every part of the plot was well executed, and the growth that we see from the characters feels real in a way that will resonate with teenagers. "Burying Eva Flores" makes my list for top teen reads of the year.

Recommended for:
Fans of Karen M. McManus, anyone who wanted to see more of Pamela on Supernatural, and teens who weren't quite ready to read "Behind Her Eyes" but enjoyed the Netflix show.

I was expecting a YA mystery with a decent story but was faced with a magic journal and the curse which in the end didn't get any explanation or any closure.
The story is promising, but the execution is not. the pace is a bit dragged and slow. High school bullying, lies and pettiness colouring this book.
I actually felt a bit bored in the middle of reading this book which is not a good sign. It's so hard to root for one of the characters in this book because none of them is likeable.

Thank you NetGalley, the author and the Publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest reviews

Thank you, BookSprout, for the ARC!

This was definitely an interesting premise.

Sophia was a fascinating protagonist and I enjoyed reading her deep thoughts. Eva was interesting too with her seemingly antagonistic role in comparison. Both of them had unlikeable traits but they were kinda entertaining to read and how they each had motives for their actions.

My issues with the story lie with the format. It reminded me of Rules For Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall which I actually DNF’d for that reason. This story didn’t feel smooth with the short chapters, changes in format (chapters, video transcripts, tweets), especially with the alternating POVs and timelines. Also the way everyone texted bothered me. Nobody messages like that anymore. The book felt too long. Nothing important was happening so it dragged. I honestly skimmed the first half because it picked up after (and thankfully).

A fun, twisty thriller that keeps you guessing even as you wonder which character you should be rooting for! Loved seeing the characters' individual journeys as they collide in unexpected ways.
