“Stop being dramatic.” “Dramatic?” I demanded dramatically.

What you'll get:
Ghosts
Law Enforcement Officers - one detective, one FBI
Second chance romance
Gay rep

Setting: Florida

I have no idea why everyone treated Rain's ability to talk with ghosts anything less than excellent as hell for their cold case close rate. He gets punted back home to Florida in semi-disgrace, on loan from the FBI, and ends up working with the one that got away and trying to pretend that there aren't nosy ghosts in the room all the time. All of a sudden, clues to the cases are popping up because the ghosts are like, ahem, my body is right over there. Fill in the blanks in the middle and say thank you, detective.

Oh, this was absolutely wonderful. I adored Rain as a main character, so complex and real. But all the side characters were equally great and all the snark and banter just gave me life. I loved how the mystery and romance went hand in hand and neither overtook the other at any point. It was perfectly balanced. And yes, it was funny too! This book reminded me a lot of Alice Winters' Medium Trouble series, though the humour in this book is more subtle and less over the top as Alice Winters' work tends to be. (Don't get me wrong, I love her books to pieces and you should definitely read them.)

I highly recommend this book if you love mysteries with a side of paranormal and a great (and at times hot) romance between two wonderful characters. I for one am going to dive into the sequel right away.

I love a cop partners-mystery-romance story, and this checks all my boxes. It's the first in the series featuring FBI Agent Rain and Brickle Bay PD Detective Danny. Years ago, their relationship imploded when Rain chose a job over Danny. Now drawn back to his hometown, he has to work with Danny again to solve a cold case. Oh yeah, and Danny can see and talk to ghosts. As soon as they are back in proximity to each other, they both long for a way to get a second chance to make it work. The have to work through serious trust issues and one gigantic secret. This is a medium level angst book for me, and I thought their chemistry and banter was good. The characters did get put through a lot but it made the ending that more poignant. The narration was also excellent.

Thank the gods I didn't judge this book by its cover because both that and the title are pretty damn bad. But the content within is so damn good. Really scratched the itch I had for a good gay paranormal mystery with a big splash of romance.

It has its pop culture cringe moments, but I'll forgive them. And it introduces a lot of side characters (not including the suspects of the murder mystery), but since it's the first book of a series I'm hoping I'll get to know them better in later installments.
