This introspective, dense novel features the inner musings of an Irish spinster. She lives with another spinster as sort of a bond servant on a farmstead in the Irish country side. Two children somehow related to her come to live with them for the summer, and their arrival plus the unexpected attentions of a local handyman upset Annie Dunne's world. The action is limited to everyday occurrences however the language is very descriptive and might appeal to those who like slow-paced character focused novels.

Very slow-moving and gentle, capturing life in 50s rural Ireland. I'd like to now read the first in the Dunne Family series, which focuses on Annie's dad.

I'd loved [b:Days Without End|30212107|Days Without End (Days Without End #1)|Sebastian Barry|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1471281193l/30212107._SY75_.jpg|50666270] but was indifferent about [b:A Thousand Moons|52255586|A Thousand Moons (Days Without End #2)|Sebastian Barry|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1566404592l/52255586._SX50_SY75_.jpg|71765449]. Thankfully this very much lived up to the former. A quietly beautiful depiction of the emotionally fragile and dependent Annie Dunne completely rooted in a wonderfully evoked time and place. I was captivated.

Overall a bit dull but enjoyable. There is very little in the way of story, but the lack of significant plot is not a weakness as this story is more about the development of the character. Unfortunately, that character is rather weak and uninteresting. The book is written well and creates sufficient tension and connection to make the characters important. However, the main character is oddly neurotic and comes across as both whiny and self-righteous somehow.

Liked the writing, liked the story less. The Secret Scripture was much better.
