I wanted to love this book. The premise of this historical fiction novel really intrigued me, and knowing the author's storytelling ability, I was expecting this to be a winner. The history didn't fail to impress, and I thought the story of how 600 Australian brides made their journey to England on a returning Aircraft Carrier was fascinating. You could tell, however, that this was an early Moyes work, as the story just didn't pull together all that well. Thank goodness for the well researched historical parts.

Such a beautiful post-war story, I really do enjoy JJM but as usual there are about 100pages too many than are necessary to tell the story.

Story was OK but I feel like Moyes didn't explore all that was there. She setup a lot of things but didn't follow through which have left me with a feeling of emptiness? I would have liked to know about other characters in more detail.

In The Ship of Brides, Jojo Moyes beautifully narrated the story of 600 Australian brides traveling to England in summer 1946 to meet their British husbands who served in WWII. This is based on the tale of the HMS Victorious, the aircraft carrier that carried 700 brides across the world. This story is about the brides' sacrifices, bullying and judging others, giving second chances, being there for mates, losing loved ones, and having a new beginning. This book also showed that women weren't allowed to forget their past, and were judged for any improper behavior or staining their reputation (like Jean) but not men. The story also highlighted that some of the marines didn't see that these Aussie women left their home and loved ones, and traveled so far based on a promise from a man they married, who might turn them down or give them up or not even show-up.

Loved it!

Man lernt nie aus I guess.

Another great JoJo Moyes book. I love the way she develops her characters, they become real to the reader.
