3.5 ⭐️ The book is written from multiple points of view and jumps back and forth through time but it was written well enough that I never felt confused.

I was really hooked by the storyline and didn’t see the plot twists coming, but the big reveal at the end was a little too unbelievable for me.

So overall I enjoyed reading this book but was slightly disappointed at the ending.

I wanted to DNF this when it used the R word twice in the first chapter, but I was borrowing it from a friend.  I decided to push through and make note of this in my review. While the rest of the plot was semi-enjoyable, I stand by the fact that the use of the word was unnecessary and shouldn’t have been in the book. There were plenty of other ways to make sure we knew the kidnapped child was being abused that didn’t include using ableist language.

Overall, I didn’t hate this but it was a reminder of why I don’t read a lot of thrillers. I’m not a fan of constant flash backs, which most thrillers depend on. I HATED Leo’s POV — he’s a messed up kid with a whole lot of trauma who needed therapy and parental attention. His dad also needed therapy. There was a lot of talk about abuse and sexual harassment/assault that I personally thought wasn’t necessary. Everyone sucked, really. Finally, a warning *ABOUT THE ACTUAL CULPRIT FYI*:
Spoilerout of all of the shitty people in this book the author could have pinned it on…. She picks one of the two lesbians? 🥴

First thing I will say, fantastic foreshadowing. How terrifying, slowly figuring out who did it, small clues clicking into place as you read on, what amazing delivery. The characters were well written and realistic, everything was so vivid. It wasn't as scary as I expected coming into it but I still really enjoyed it. I really recommend this, but be wary of the triggers!

Wow, was this dark and unexpected. I went in with no expectations after hearing mixed things about Mary Kubica as a whole but this really had me on the edge of my seat. There were so many scenes that had me squirming in my seat from the uncomfortable situations and tense atmosphere. You jump right into a child being held captive and it was so hard to read about. I almost gave up right then but the writing was so compelling and sucked me in. You then jump around in different perspectives all taking place at different times and I was hooked into all of the POVs and I think they all added something to the narrative as a whole.

As for our central mystery, there are three mainly and I can say I was pretty surprised with each reveal. Because of the fast-paced nature, I had no time to speculate on what was going on I just was reading so quickly. That is how I tend to tell if I am reading a potential 5-star mystery. If I had to give some cons I would say that if you do think about what is going on everything is pretty easy to figure out and also I think there is minimal character development or depth which could take away from your attachment to some of the characters but I had enough to make me care and sympathize with all of our characters.
